what's the point of helmets?
my one colonist who i equipped with the starting bolt and all the armor, including the plasteel advanced helmet, just got brained and killed in one hit. what gives? why use a helmet if it doesnt even stop the bullets? kind of confused as to how this happens or why

So you're saying advanced helmets should make you immune to damage? Wearing a advanced helmet is like wearing level 2 helms in pubg vs level 3 ones. Now, if marine helmets stop blocking basic weapons than we can talk about how they don't work.

If you look at the gear it has an i for information, then under that it has a set of armour values, hover over sharp (for bullets and knife attacks) and it explains that the game takes the armour value, my starting helmet has Armour 88.2 vs sharp, subtracts the armour penetration value from that, a bolt rifle has fairly high pen of 27%, and then rolls a number between 0-100 and compares therng roll to your armour-armour pen.

Then one of three things happen: The shot gets deflected and you get 0 damage, the shot does half damage (as blunt), the shot does full damage.

Your pawn's head has like 8hp (I think) and a bolt rifle does around 18 damage.

TL:DR The in game explanation is better than my summary and can be found by looking at your gear.

never said it should make you like 100% immune, but what is the point of wearing a helmet if getting shot in the head kills you?

Helmet won't help you if the projectile goes under it or through your face. It just increases the chance of protecting your head, provided the helmet is what's struck and not anything else.

Combat Extended mechanics made armor act like armor, its not avail yet for 1.0 and dont know when it will be updated, but i think the system is sitll a nice improvement over the former system. but i think the RNG system 0-100 is still pretty lame

I checked the helmet, it went from like 96% to 47% so I assume that it hit the helmet

You see armor, doesn't always work
Vintorez Oct 23, 2018 @ 5:09pm
Even with armor, it all comes down to percentages and RNG.

Whenever a bullet strikes an armor part, it makes a 1-100 roll and depending on the result affects how much damage the bullet does, with armor making a smaller window for effective damage.

With a plasteel advanced helmet, the enemy problably got the equivalent of a D&D style crit, bypassing the armor for lethal damage.

helmets are not completely bulletproof bub

Even with the best helmets today you are lucky to come out with just a concussion if you are still alive.

Oh my god.
This logic is painful.

this game is not realistic, in many factors. obviously im salty that i lost an extremely effective colonist to something that should have been prevented, and ive never actually had a colonist die from anything but instant kills which happen a bit too much in my opinion. fully geared nine shooting guy vs a raider with a 15% chance to hit braining my guy with a plasteel advanced helmet. in fact, the most dangerous colonist ive ever had was in a seperate game and he had 2 shooting skill and a machine pistol. he killed like 5 people from heart or brain shots, including geared people. not once did he down people, just instant death.

Getting shot in the head, there is only so much a helment can do. There is a good chance of the helment not saving your life, it merely improves the odds. Your logic is not to wear the helment given that the helment may very well fail.

If one of your colonists get hit in the head, which is a vital bodypart and has a limited amount of health, youre unlucky.
A high-dmg gun will kill that pawn, even with 50% dmg reduction.

Death is something you'll have to deal with in Rimworld.
That's part of the story and part of the
fun[dwarffortresswiki.org].

A steel helmet could have saved your life in the WW1. If you want to have a steel helmet keeping your head save, you would need at least a helmet that is 5kg heavy. I believe, even if it would stop a bullet, the impact would break your neck (any maticians here to confirm this?).
