Heart Attack
Just wanting to vent at having a pawn die of a heart attack out of nowhere fairly early. She had no heart condition and yet suddenly she had one and died before I could do anything about it. Most things in this game I'm fine with but this was basically just the game deciding to kill a pawn. Might as well just decide to have lightning strike a pawn.

That's why you build a hospital.

No the problem was that she died in the time it took for the doctor to carry her to the hospital and go and get medicine. I literally had no time to actually do anything

You can always improvise... Unless it was an ice sheet or some other extreme biome, you could just set dying colonist on doctor care only, put a medical sleeping spot nearby and forbid a hospital so he/she would be carried to that spot. It worked for me one time when heart attack struck one of a pawns across a 400x400 map.

I do this sometimes after a firefights, where I hsve pawn with few hours to bleed out. Decent doctor works quick enough to save that guy from bleeding out. After that you can carry him to hospital safely. You may have to fight off infections, there might be scars but hey, pawn lived another day.

What age was she? The older pawns are, the more likely health conditions are. And that includes random heart attacks even if they don't specifically have a heart condition.

The problem is that heart attacks are unique in that they are a single injury for which doctors grab only a single medkit but which requires multiple treatments until you get a success.

Ideally, a doctor should start treatment immediately without meds while you create a new medicine stockpile next to the patient and get someone else to move the medkits before re-enabling treatment with medicine.

Basically, you need to execute two dozens actions because Tynan can't program doctors to pick up 10 medkits if an operation has a 10% success chance.

Mods can help make doctors less braindead

Older pawns have higher skills but come with potential health effects and risks of heart attack. That's a tradeoff you have to make and should always be aware of. Always look at ages when you start the map or recruit somebody.

Pawns below age 50 have a 1/99999999 chance of having a heart attack any given day (actual number heh), between 50 and 60 that increases to 1/2500, and between 60 and 100 it increases to 1/300.

Pawns also have a 1/120 chance of having a heart attack on any given day while high on wakeup.

Heart attacks are completely avoidable, but especially tricky to deal with to make them a threat, if they happen in a bad location it's often death. If they happen in your base near meds, or you use a mod to change the AI response to them, they become trivial.

Heart attacks can only happen if pawn has heart. No heart - no problem. Just remove that unreliable lump of flesh and put an indefectible bionic machine instead. Problem solved.
