Can you turn down friendly fire?
250 hours in this game and its pretty lolzy, no matter where around what you are firing at 9/10 bullets will hit an ally/pet "Somewhat" near it over the actual target. It has to be a bug or something.

no projectiles are simulated (sort of). The best you can do is Zone animals and non combatents into a remote safe area inside your base and shoot the attackers from range then when they get close go melee with a 1 shot gun only guy behind them so they fire over the melee person's shoulder so it wont hit them.

XCom tactics 101 - flank, flank, flank!
This applies to Rimworld too ;)
As for pets and non combatants, you are responsible for their location. If you don't get them to safety, then you are pretty 'lolzy'.

And cover destruction too.

I have used Avoid Friendly Fire for a few play throughs now, highly recommend it. Also avoids pets but it does not stop your guys from accidentally shooting that thrumbo that wandered between your hunter and the bunny he was hunting. Also doesn't stop your turrets from ripping holes in yer peeps.

You have been warned. >:)

Careful micromanagement while they are unskilled. Once they get skilled they'll hit friendlies that are right in front of them a lot less. At range it will still be an issue no matter what. FFF mod linked above works if you really don't want to deal with it. But turning it off takes a chunk of the game experience away, no matter how frustrating it may be in the moment.

Why now? Its fun. To position your sims and carefully manage combat. It makes you think of strategies and makes the game harder. I personally love crossfire strategy to shoot on enemys in 120 degree angle.

Fun to have one of you best colonists walk around a corner and get 1 shot from the hunter with a sniper rifle that insists on hunting from 40 tiles away.

if you possition a person directly behing another person they shoot around one another. Melee people should use shields when possible or be used to attack people you're not directly shooting at. When attacking someone with melee in the direction one of your people is shooting you will get hit, but as long as you are not near where your dude is directly shooting you will have minimal friendly fire.

As others have said none combat people should be zoned in a safe place, probably the dorms or homes(as long as they are close together). All none combatents should have some protection even if they are not intended to fight, i find knifes to be the best, 2 none combatant with knives can deal some quick damage if jumping 1 foe.

Stacking works 2 deep (3 pawns). They don't get the advantages of cover though. Not recommended for miniguns.
