RimWorld
Disproportionately Large No of Japanese Players?
I notice this a lot when in the community hub of rimworld compared to other somewhat indie titles. Does anybody have any idea why?

Note: Not complaining about this, just curious. I don't know the exact stats I'm just basing this off my own observations.

Sometimes diffrent types of games or just a game in genral just creates big waves in specific places around the world. No idea why Rimworld has so many Japanese players though but cool nontheless. Sometime there is no explanation ether. Also like Nick said not complaining just trying to answer a question.
Sorry for the bad spelling.
Yeah they post like 90% of the screenshots. Pretty funny.

This is how I noticed also lol.

Perhaps it's because the Japenese gaming market is so saturated with much of the same content. Perhaps because gaming is so common in Japan more and more people are looking for something different, new and fresh, new ways to stand out from others perhaps.

But then again I'm probably making vast generalisations?

Yeah, I think it is what was mentioned above, there's no particular explanation but a separate phenomenon. This game might appeal to them a lot due to many reasons, one of them being the fact that the game is sort of a life sim with cartoony graphics. They seem to like it a lot.

I like your thinking. Can we get any sociologists on this xD? Would make a nice research project.... maybe

If anything it's at least partially the opposite of this. RimWorld fits in fairly nicely with the popular Japanese SLG genre. It even scratches some of the niche "themes" you only usually find in JP games, almost as if it was made for that market.

Also playing into it is probably the distribution. Steam isn't that popular in Japan, there are a ton of other PC gaming outlets, and physical discs are still really popular there. I'm guessing Steam is the only real way to get RimWorld in Japan, so you see more of that community here than for other games which might branch out and sell their game through those more popular options.
Only thing annoying about it for me is when I see cool mods/screenshots and I can't understand a damned word they're saying.
in rimworld, we can make colonists from anime characters and make them live, fight, fall in love in a freedom world. i think this took attention of Japanese, especially who make game commentary.

there are tons of rimworld gameplay videos made by japanese in YouTube and nico nico douga(big japanese video streaming site).
many popular videos are commentary using speach synthesizer which are called voiceroid. it is kinda vocaloid hatsune miku , machine singer soft.
it comes with cute anime character.

the point is we can put her in a game as a custome colonist and have her do a commentary. that enables them to make fun game videos. thats why rimworld videos are popular among some japanese i think.

im japanese by the way.

Makes sense! How do you know this out of interest?

as far as i know colony sim games arnt very common in japan, and the fact that this game is also a colony sim that you can actually mod is another huge attraction, so im guessing to japan this game is like a gold mine of "omg yes pls" in terms of overall value.

but then agian i could be wrong, this is just a guess.

I play a lot of Japanese PC games and keep my eye on releases every month (on like DLsite and whatnot).

This might be the best explanation, from a japanese guy. :))

Thanks
Very interesting thread, inded. Basically I am going to buy this game in a minute because of this (after watching japanese rimworld videos with funny robo-voice commentary, those are awesome)..
