Cassandra extreme, where raids gets tougher as your wealth increases.

Tough biome, like sea ice, or other biomes with extreme temperatures.

Permanent map conditions

Mods.. There are ton of them to make it the way you want, from increasing raid frequency to starting with no reasearch

Randy is random... so you might just be in a playthrough where you are lucky. Somethimes he can be really tough, sometimes not... Random!

Try glittertech mod. Commandos from here are... well, tough like nails.

I use dev mode to send huge swarms of enemies my way to test my defense's integrity.

On my first Randy Random Extreme game... he sent a raid party over over 15 enemies at me within the first minute of a typical scenario crash landing start with 3 colonists, random pets, and some survivables.

Randy still scales raid size/equipment based on your wealth, pawns, defenses and difficulty setting, just like Cassandra. The main way that Randy is random is in the nature and timing of events.

On a really bad day, Randy might decide on 2 consecutive raids with little or no break in between during a solar flare, while half your colony is incapped from disease. There is no "fair" with Randy, but he's also not intentionally malicious. Cassandra will hold her punches (for a while) if you're struggling with multiple issues already, but you will almost never see her do 4 or 5 positive events in a row with no bad/neutral ones in between.

There is mods that add new storytellers that can switch the game up.

But this one is recommanded to use only if you have seen everything vanilla on hardest difficulties

The Increased Forest Density mods change things a lot, your world will look like Endor. Forest fires are lethal, its hard to get around the map, fighting can be very messy if you risk engagements away from your base and you can add in Hostile versions which increase and harden predators and mammals. On the plus side, you have so much wood its really not a problem early game.
