How do you play the hand-stabbing game

I can't find any instructions and I can't figure out how to play by fooling around either. I click around and the longest I ever lasted was to the second stab - and I still don't know why/how.

So how do you actually play this game?

You follow the knife hand floating above the table as it moves, and click on the green button below knife after it appears and before it fades away, one finger gap at a time. Too soon, stabby stabby. Too late, stabby stabby. Misclick, stabby stabby. The tempo also increases to make it even more impossibly difficult.

I actually gave up before I even beat it because it seems almost as painful a way to get 30 gold as really stabbing your hand. Really, it's awful, so just don't do it, unless there's an achievement you absolutely have to have.

Yup, the mini-game is at the same time perfectly useless and boring.
They must have left it in because this game was developed for tablets / touchscreens, with a mouse it is just a painful experience.

Not to mention: The time it takes you to win 30 gold is too long - might as well go and trade something. You'll make the 30g faster than not stabbing your hand.
