Forged pistons ♥♥♥♥ (right now)
An issue I've run into with a lot of high powered engines is the enormous gap between heavy and light forged pistons. There's no middle ground, which severely hurts the end product.

On the last engine I made, a 5 liter V8, the heavy pistons limited the max rpm to 6000, with a power limit of 890HP, while the light pistons could handle up to 8300 rpm but no more than 480HP (Just over half!) before running into reliability issues.

There's already a lot of options for pistons, and bottom end parts in general, and I feel adding another would clutter the menu excessively, but it would be the simplest solution. I'd like to have an overall bottom end weight slider, scrapping the light/medium/heavy options entirely, but I get the feeling that it would be much more work to implement, and may detract from other planned improvements.

You may need to add quality to the engine family and bottom end to compensate.

I agree, ideally there should probably be a selection of what material... whether iron, Forged Steel or CNC titanium stuff and so on... which acts as a material multiplier...

... but then a slider how much weight it should have... and the better the material the lighter you can make it... allowing for much more fine grain in what you actually want.

But I also think you would likely have to take that step further and apply it to the conrods/crank as well with just a material selection & implementing a weight slider for them as well because they have the same issue.

At least currently you are often locked into an extreme end. Either light or heavy piston/conrod/crank, but nothing in between.

And that in return makes it also annoying to pick the corresponding parts because if you go heavy pistons even if you don't entirely need it, you still have to oversize conrods/crank too because of how otherwise you are limitted by them. And as a result the thing revs like crap.

I hate being the one to say it, but the "choice" the bottom end revamp should have given... is mostly not really there because you are still railroaded into picking certain parts together due to the lack of fine grain. ^^

But that said I doubt another rework is going to happen because of the amount of work that already went into revamping the bottom end... only to revamp it yet again. ^^
