turn them into 3d objects and then move them where you need them to be. Enjoy the suffering :)

Activate free-roam camera and activate 3D fixture mode

We're adding a disclaimer in game giving you that tip, along with stating the fact that interior design in Automation isn't a supported feature. So yes, not very intuitive!

When i try to place interior parts, like seats, it wants to go everywhere on the outside, like the roof. How do one get to view the inside of the vehicle and place seats and instrument panel etc on the inside instead of on the roof? Tried 3-d camera but nothing happens, it doesn't activate or whatever. No matter what i do, it refuse to go interior.

Use the free-roam camera (I think that's Alt-C?) so you can place your view wherever you want, then turn on 3D fixture mode and place your fixtures in 3D space where you want them.

Shift-C

That didn't work either. It tries to place dashboard, seats etc on the roof or anywhere on the outside and it's just a mess. Definitely something that needs fixing in the game. Need an interior mode where the roof is removed while placing items.

They always start outside as 2D. You need to change each single asset to 3D mode individually.

There's a button on the right that lets you select what's visible and what's not. I just make the body invisible while moving interior pieces around. Also bear in mind that interiors were never a feature in the game, the presence via third party mods is what we've got. An impressive if tedious feat.

Use 3D fixture mode. There are little buttons on a fixture "2D" and "3D". Select "3D", and you should be able to freely move the fixture.

It would be nice if a more user-friendly interior design system was a thing in the future, but as I understand, this is being worked on. Something like door cards, ceilings, pillars and so on snapping to the appropriate parts of the interior would do just fine, IMO.

It's not really something we have planned, no. Interior design is really just a happy side effect of the 3D design system we implemented a while back.

Oh, well, then at least a better selection of interior parts, particularly for earlier eras (in proper default size, orientation and scale for an average human), and perhaps some kind of custom snap point system to make placement of specific interior elements less fiddly. Once nice thing I can think of is to make the body surface "cut off" any dedicated interior bits that stick out. That would create a lot more freedom to shape the interior bits.

My biggest complaints about interior design is that things are hard to line up perfectly with each other, and that it's always a fight not to have anything stick out without leaving holes. Fix that, and it'll be good. Could also make interior pieces spawn in 3D mode already. It might be a happy accident, but it's very much worth capitalizing on.
