It would be a blessed engine
Well, for my intentions of mimicking the Subaru 1235 a flat-12 is actually the accurate type.
But gameplay wise, familiarity would be a reason.
Person wise, for the same reason one would opt for a V-16 over a V-12, because it's just more ridiculous
Hello Killrob, Flat 12 is 180° V12 with shared crankpins, whereas Boxer 12 has all 12 cylinders on own crankpins. I feel Boxer 12 would be smoother than Flat 12 which has shared crankpins.
A automotive crank can only have 8 crankpins. (I8 V16 B8)
Only huge marine or industrial engines have more than 8 crankpins.
Look at a modern Porsche crank, the piece between each main pin
and the crankpins is a thin plate, there is no way that can be made as a Boxer 12.
ferrari did use them for a good while, from 1973 to 1996 iirc.
What robert.norgren is saying is true to the extent that it must have a well-design harmonic damper in order to not explode itself at high revs.
Overall I think that a boxer 12 is just overall inferior to the flat 12 because its main advantage (smoothness) can't improve the engine to a significant degree in this case. Flat 12 is on the list of maybe engines, boxer 12 would be a big fat No. :P
