Automation - The Car Company Tycoon Game

Automation - The Car Company Tycoon Game

I really want to, but can't *get into* Automation
I'm not sure how to put this into words, but I thought I'd give some feedback.

I've supported Automation since it first came out, as it really seems like a dream game to me. I've kept it in my Library and not uninstalled it at all, so that says something good about it too.

But every time I play it, I get an hour or two, playing with engines and building a flashy car, and that's about all it ever hooks me into.

I really want to get into production and tweaking manufacturing, as that's what I love in games, but every time I dip into it, I'm just presented with this nicely formatted spreadsheet of numbers all over the place, and it's just so unattractive to me. I don't really know where I'm meant to be focusing and where I can tweak these numbers.

I've never managed to get my head around even different car models and variations.

I love the idea of numbers of engineers on projects and parts being really good, but taking longer to manufacture, and those sorts of consequences, but I just can't seem to click with the interface!

I think the game design is great, but I think my major issue is with these pages of numbers.

Maybe I'm the only person that feels this way, but I thought I'd offer this opinion, in case others think it too?

TL:DR - I love the concept of the game and desperately want to fall in love with it, but the interface design just seems to not work for me in so many different ways :-(

I think them maybe the design is just too awkward for you!. I would give this feedback to the devs, but also keep in mind that right now design is the last thing on their minds; they want to implement the features and then clean it up in the end.
i agree when playing the campaign i want to get past the spread sheets as fast as possible just because it's just way too cluttered.
I am exactly the same way, build lots of engines and bodies but not much campaign. But as thegreensteem said I'm sure the GUI for campaign can get cleaned up and pretty for even the most casual of players to use, but at the moment the devs are still in the early EARLY stages of the game making it actually function properly. Unfortunately with a team the size they have these things take much longer than a fully funded game studio would.
I totally agree. I love designing the car and engine and what not. but as soon as you have your company start setting up it becomes more of a boring Graph simulator. I am not caring for the campaign as it is rather dull compared to actually making the cars.

On another note: I cant level out over/under steering for the life of me. Tires feel impossible too, I either have bulky tires with too much tread, or too small with less steering. And you have to go bigger just to get reasonable brakes on the darn thing.

Sadly it'll be that way for most people, myself included, but I know some people like Excel Simulator With Cars. Hopefully they can make a version of the campaign where you just design cars and engines based on random criteria given to you instead of having to run the whole company. Now that would be a fun campaign for me.

I generally ignore the graph stats because i export my cars into Beam.ng but if you don't do that, I just would go with what looks good.

To piggyback on this, you should absolutely look into getting BeamNG to play with this. I personally only ever play sandbox and dont touch the campaign for the same reasons. I love sitting down for an hour or two and making a car with a couple trims in sandbox then sending it all over to beam and watching it come to life

Yeah, Automation and Beam.NG is the first collaboration of it's kind in the history of gaming. It's quite remarkable to be able to make a complete car from the ground up in Automation, then immediately after drive it in Beam.NG. Go back to Automation, tweak it, try it out again. Etc. I've never had so much fun with car games. But to be fair, I also loved Automation when it was nothing more than an Inline-4 engine builder.
Ive taken alot of time to play automation career mode and the best tip I can give is to do trial and error. Use normal settings or something similar and start from there.
In the beginning youre most likely aiming to make a money maker machine, best options from my experience is Family/Budget Family and Premium/Budget Premium. If you choose premium you will have a easier time making profit but you might have to use comfortable suspension setup wiht alot of rolling to sell more cars, on the other hand with family cars youre best of making boring 1.4L fuel efficient engines, its easier to sell but harder to make a profit, but once you do you cash in bigtime.

When it comes to manufacturing (the math part) i like to have 2 goals with any cars i design, it should not take longer than 5 years (60 time) to make, and making sure you waste the least amount of material, (its between optimal and wasteful). your first car will probably not be able to do well but your goal is to fix it in facelift (which also should take 60 time), now with facelift you have already engineered most of the car so optimalising production and even perhaps making it more reliable is really going to increese profits.

When it comes to factory management i normaly put automation to the point where i produce the most cars, this you need to change after you have adjusted the manufacturing process mentioned earlier. avoid expanding your factories too early, it might lead to a early loss.

When it comes to selling the car, i normaly check the demographic tab and see ''budget for each group'' and take my price to the lowest point at example family, you might loose money selling each car but its important to gain a large customer base early to make profit better later on.

Give it couple of tries untill you figure out whats the best way for you, id recommend hetvesia as a starting ground as it is easier to make profits there by simply having nice interior.

Other things to consider is that once youre close to 1960's you will have to consider swapping from leaded fuel to regular (once you have researched it). you should be selling regular fuel cars at around 1966 or close to it.

Once you reach the later stages of the game a easy way to make more money is to have multiple cars use the same engine, this way you can save time engineering and make sure engines are reliable. Only thing thats important to remember is that if youre doing this you have to release every car model facelift the same year, because once you have locked down a facelift you cant add it to a new car while its being engineered. this is more for once you have mastered the game and shouldnt be done before 1980's

if you want coaching il happily show you the robes, just hmu at discord at; Ostehovel#6104
Forgot to mention, my absolute favorite part about career mode is that youre able to make more spesific cars than you can do in sandbox mode, because you have a research function that allows you to unlock tech from earlier years (example getting abs earlier because investment in driver assist tech). This allows for some very cool cars to be made that you cant really do in sandbox mode without having the wrong year setting.

That and getting filthy rich is probably my favorite aspect of the game.

Ironically, my only problem with it is that Beam's graphics make the cars look more like die-cast versions of themselves. I'm not a graphics nut by any means, but I'm hoping that at some point, the cars look more detailed in Beam

Yeah, the default Beam cars generally look decent but you do lose a fair bit of graphical quality on the cars going from Automation to Beam. I also doubt the Beam devs will "fix" that. Still, I will happily take cars maybe not looking so great over not being able to export them from Automation.

The latest little dev update on automation's youtube channel announced that transparent windows and metallic paint for automation cars is coming!
transparent windows are going to look like ♥♥♥♥ though, there's no interior.
