why are there 2 types of drum brakes?
hello agian, i have been playing this game (non steam) and i am wondering....

Why is there two types of drumb brakes? what i am saying is: why is there a 2LS and a SLS type?
i think the 2LS is the one with the handbrake in it (for front wheels only) and i read a wikipedia page about drumb brakes and that the hand brake is located towards the front. did i just awnser my question or what?

2LS drum brakes aren't just for handbrakes.

Depending on how the pivots of the shoes are set up as well as the servos, you end up with either 2 leading brake shoes or one leading and one trailing brake shoe.

A leading shoe offers better braking power compared to a trailing shoe because is has a self servo effect, as the friction on the drum causes the shoe to apply more force to the drum. This means that having 2 instead of one leading shoe will offer more stopping power.

The issue is that when reversing (or parked uphill), leading shoes act as trailing shoes and trailing shoes act as leading. While this makes pretty much no difference on a single leading shoe brake, it makes 2 leading shoes brakes useless as they become 2 trailing shoe brakes.

This is why you never see them on the back wheels, so you have a decent amount of braking power when reversing or for holding the car on a hill with the parking brake.

Thanks very much.
