How to produce multiple trim levels
The guides seem to recommend selling multiple trim levels or variant models at the same time. In-game I can't figure out how to do this except with totally separate factories. Any changes to a current model are classed as a facelift, so the old model is phased out when production starts. I got an engine factory to produce two variants at once (no idea how that happened), but the car factory seems to be unable to produce more than a single design at a time. Since it takes several years to engineer and set up the factory, at a cost of millions to hundreds of millions, how would one offer different trims? Do you really need a totally separate car factory for every model and trim, but engine factories can produce multiple?

OK I watched the tutorial again and maybe I got it this time, lol. They must be cloned at the same time, before any production starts. The game leads you right into the engineering and factory setup, so it's not very obvious how to get back to the starting window to set up the trim levels. Perhaps something should be changed in the flow of the first car setup steps?

There are pointers and text for when you complete your first trim and get dropped back into the project manager. They do point to you cloning your first trim :) maybe you clicked past that? Cheers!

Ok I must have missed that. There's a lot of info on every screen, it's just that kind of game.
