Once the pistons can safely reach 12k rpm, you will need to worry about valve float probably.
DOHC with 5 valves per cylinder with the largest camshaft you can have will help limit valve float. If this is not enough, increase the quality of the valvetrain by going to the valvetrain section and increase the slider on the right. Note, by doing this the engine can get very expensive very quickly.
I messed around with it and hit peak power @10k or so iirc, but that was with boost.
I agree I got bored of it when I made my 12k rpm engine - the engine was completely dead below like 6k rpm.
