Aura at the start of battle. Aura aura aura aura. At least, I love that skill anyway.
Mode of attack is Paladin -> some normal attacks to stabilize the chain gauge, then switch to Mage or Shaman, whichever you prefer, and then get his chain gauge up to stagger.
When Caius is in Commando stance:
His commando stance is the easiest to juggle. When he snaps his fingers, as you have noticed, he will then attack. The easy way would be to tab to paradigm switching menu and hover over the Knight paradigm while Lightning attacks on Mage/Shaman. When he snaps his fingers, select Knight and use the blocking skill to completely mitigate all damage. Then, switch back to Mage/Shaman and continue notching his stagger gauge up. You may need to switch back to Paladin once to stabilize his gauge if it destabilized while he's not staggered.
You could also just switch to Knight and tank it straight up front, as being on the paradigm itself lowers damage taken tremendously. However, since you're already on the paradigm, just use the skill in time to completely mitigate all damage. Not a hard thing to do at all.
Once Caius is staggered, just stick to Mage/Shaman to get it up to a higher % within 1-2 turns and then switch to Paladin to deal heavy damage. Note that you probably want to switch to Paladin when he's staggered to launch him into the air, especially if he's on Medic.
When Caius is in Ravager stance:
It's not easy to juggle Caius's Ravager stance with Knight. Hence, most people (and me, included) just straight up go on Mage/Shaman and just tank whatever he pops, as the damage isn't high at all. Shouldn't be a problem at all.
When Caius is in Medic:
Hopefully, you've already staggered him or are close to staggering him. Then, just launch him and he can't heal himself.
If you're going with this strat, always keep Aura up. It helps you finish the battle tons faster. Remember that your HP left at the end of the battle contributes to your star ranking too, so if you screwd up somehow, but are on a good time, just use the Elixir and finish him off. It'll increase your chances at getting 5 stars, and advancing you to Chaos Bahamut.
Using this strat, I 5 star'd him at level 5 and at level 9 (or whatever level just before the max level is). My general approach is to just kill him before he even goes on Ravager stance, and finish the battle with full health. That's what I did on level 9 anyway, and still got 5 stars. I'm pretty sure this strat is viable for all levels once you get Aura, excluding the max level. (Is it even possible to 5 star at the max level? The score deduction is way too huge..)
Hence, with this strat, it doesn't really matter what your level is, anywhere between 5 - 9 works. However, you might want to pick 5 if you can't really kill him so fast, but are able to block everything he throws at you, as this would give you more time to get your 5 star ranking. Others say Level 7 is the sweet spot, so this level might be the most comfortable for you then too.
And yeah, if you lose Aura you lose. :)
I kind of find the rhythm here is to have 2 SHM/MGE then KNi. He'll follow with 2 attacks. I once get him up to almost 0HP but then then 2nd stagger seems bit difficult.
The thing is i find if you don't block Chaos attack, you end up being launched up and wasted time where you can get 1 SHM/MGE attacks to build up the stagger. Probably need more practice.
Many i have spend like more than 10 hours i think on just this 2 fights :/. I just want to complete the DLC and know the story.
It shouldn't really matter, as long as you're still fighting on point and blocking stuff that matters. You don't need to be perfectly optimal to get 5 stars on that fight. I get launched plenty in that fight, but I always finish with 5 stars. I'm honestly not too sure why you're not getting 5 stars, as you said, you've spent so much time on it X_X. I would like to be of better help, but I'm not entirely sure why you're not even getting it x_X.
I have no problem beating Cauius anymore. I beat him 9 times out of 10 times now. I also finally beat Chaos Bahamut.. *phew*. Don't quite get the story though. May need to google what it all means and when LR returns and stuff.
Also, the cutscenes shows i have Lightning monster crystal now. By the way, do i have to start a new game to get the crystal? As i've finished the game, where will LR crystal be? If continue existing game, is the crystal automatically in backpack or something?
Also, thanks all for the great help. The key is Aura in beating Cauis and Bahamut. Gah.. I think without Aura, we will never get 5 star.
Congratulations man! If you saw that you got Lightning's crystal at the spoils of war, then she'll be in your list of monsters you own, just like any other monster. Just add her to your party, then level her up etc. :)
