This may be why this game runs so bad.
Its not a port at all. Its an emulation. This is supported by the fact that:

1) It only uses very little of the cpu/gpu and doesn't support more than one core and thread just like the consoles.
2) When it drops, its excatly where it droppped on the consoles.
3) The fact that the game now has a datalog bug when run above 720p. However this only happens in "official" 1080p. When run through GeDoSaTo (which doesn't touch the resolution of the launcher) the datalog bug isn't there.
4) I can't confirm this myself, but I've read that if you run the game without the launcher, all your graphics settings are ignored despite there being a setup.xml already present.

If I'm right, then they cannot fix the performance.

I seriously doubt it xd

For PS3 emulation, you would need many times the power of the original ps3 surely.

And they would never do it, seeing as someone might reverse engineer it on the PC.

It's a port, for a game that seriously stretched the limits of the console, there are bound to be inefficiencies everywhere than if designed for x86 processors.

Maybe you're right, but it'd be the 360 the game's emulating not the ps3. I'm just at a loss then as to why the launcher must remain open in 13-2 and gives the datalog bug in 13-1 then.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the xbox version.

In any case that ran at 576p, not 720p for FFXIII, so if it emulated it without the ability to change resolution, it would be that.

I think it is something to do with 2d object scaling for different higher resolutions. THey just forgot about the enemy intel hiding in the datalog.

As for the performance, well, it barely ran well enough on consoles, they just ported it as is without many (any) enhancements. Including the framepacing that is not needed.

That's my theory anyways.

I want to know why the hell i cannot play this game, when i can clearly play 13-2 just fine.

It really doesn't make any sense why i can can launch and play the sequel and not the predecessor (FF13)!

It's not emulated, it's just badly optimized.
CJHRRIHRH Dec 28, 2014 @ 3:04pm
So would turninf off threadee optimisation improve performance?

You have no idea what you're talking about.

Furthermore, if you would have read about GeDoSaTo and it's developers progress at all aside from simply using it like a blind sheep you would know that GeDoSaTo had exactly the same issue of what you call "datalog bug", it's dev wrote about it and implemented a work around for the missing hud/ log elements early on.

So this topic is simply another waste of ppl's time, like many similar topics before it will only spread half-truths and missinformation based on flawed comprehension of the topics at hand and this is why SE will get away with it, again as ppl accept "it's not on SE to fix their crap" and buy their stuff anyhow.

Everyone blindly buys into their crap of course so that they know how "viable" "PC as a platform" is for them,... yeah as if they wouldn't have noticed by now, it's pretty much their modus operandi, as if blind support of their methods did anything over the years to prevent all those ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ports,.. no, it enabled them to keep going ahead, lazy-ass-crappy-ports with little to no effort, easy money.

Instead complaining where we should ppl lament over things they don't understand, don't hold SE responsible and bug the one person who is actually doing what he can to work around given quality limitations.

I think the workaround was unintended, as he was unaware of the issue when I messaged him on his blog.

Furthermore, the workaround no longer works with latest issue of Gedosato (reason for contacting him).

Check his release notes, blog and forum posts, early on he clearly addressed missing hud elements/ log text and how he implemented a workaround for them with an early version soon after.

No idea what you're speaking of but, check his release notes, blog posts, early on he clearly addressed missing hud elements/ log text and how he implemented a workaround for them with an early version soon after.

We are talking about the current datalog enemy intel bug of missing text / libra missing enemy info in FFXIII at greater than 720p resolutions.

What are you on about?

I wrote "this may be" NOT "this is".

I only thought it may be emulated, because of all the badly optimised games I've played in the past, they all ran better than what they did on consoles. These games do not: especially 13-2. So I thought maybe they just used some kind of 360 emulator hence why the games came out so quick after one another, and hence why their performance shortcomings mimic those of the consoles.

And FYI: I am not trying to waste anyone's "time".
introducingpants Dec 28, 2014 @ 11:15pm
You're high and drunk if you think SE would write a 360 emulator from scratch (before Microsoft would on the Xbox One , which is basically a PC) instead of just porting their engine to PC. Do you have any clue the level of software engineering (time + complexity) required to write a full emulator versus just porting the engine?
talgaby Dec 29, 2014 @ 1:15am
But he is right in one thing: the game feels like an emulation, even now. Not even Dark Souls 1 felt his much… emulated-y.
Kaszak Dec 29, 2014 @ 1:59am
PS3 or X360 emulator is a feat of engineering way harder to make than just simply porting the game. Do you really think SquareEnix would commit massive resources and breach multitude of patents just to bring FFXIII to PC? I'm sure the port reuses as much code as possible (that would explain the similarities to console version) but thinking it's being emulated is just silly. Emulated game would not run as fast as it curretly dooes, cuz emulation has a massive CPU overhead.
