Still works but does take ages.

Inflict Imperil before you start casting Death to roughly double your chances. If you go long enough without killing, you might try a save/quit/reload, which seems to shake up the RNG.

Every debuff adds 1% onto the already 1% chance of Death actually succeeding. You can have a max of 7% since 6 debuffs is the max you can have on an enemy.

Doesn't Marlboro Wand increase that % somewhat too?

Yes. Not by a whole lot, but every little % helps. The Wand also helps you get all those other debuffs on him more reliably.

Malboro Wand does not directly increase the chances of instant death. It does help you inflict debuffs*, and as noted, each status ailment you've inflicted does increase the chance of Death. Aside from the number of status ailments inflicted, the only other factors determining the chance of instant death are SAB role level bonuses.

Neochu is immune to every status ailment except Imperil and instant death (and Provoke, but it's not clear whether or not Provoke affects the chance of Death). Thus, you can't get the base chance (before SAB role bonuses) any higher than 2% (or 3% if Provoke counts).

You can potentially inflict as many as 8 status ailments on an enemy. There are 9 total status ailments that players have access to--Deprotect, Deshell, Imperil, Poison, Slow, Curse, Pain, Fog, Daze--but the max number of buffs and debuffs on an enemy is 8. Inflicting a 9th will cause the oldest to fall off. This means that you can theoretically get up to a 9% base chance of instant death (10% if Provoke counts) on an enemy that is vulnerable to enough status ailments. You may have been thinking of Adamantoise when you cited 7%, as Adamantoise is a common Death target and is vulnerable to 6 status ailments.

*: the "debuffs" affected by Belladonna/Malboro Wand are Deprotect, Deshell, Imperil, and Poison. The "debilitations" affected by Pandoran/Calamity Spear are Slow, Curse, Pain, Fog, and Daze.

Is it just me or are SE trying to make mathematicians out of us ^^

Thanks for the replies guys.
One final question though: Can death only be used against single units who are alive? Im trying to cheese death spam mission 53 but ive been here for an hour now (no hyperbole) and its just not working.

Im trying to death spam the main flying mob whilst ignoring the slugs

Instant death can work on any target that isn't immune, regardless of the presence of other enemies. Are you debuffing Zirnitra at all before you start casting Death at it?

As an aside, why are you trying to cheese the fight? For a top-end mark, Zirnitra is relatively easy to kill in a straight up fight.

I tried a few attempts at debuffing it first but it takes about 3-4 turns for just one to land and Im using the 30% chance ones listed on the wiki page. Ive also tried using another sabateur to spam debuffs alongside me also spamming death but some reason Fang debuffs the slugs. Ill just try doing it normally because im just fed up with this now.

It's easier to land (non-Death) debuffs at higher chain levels. I usually use SAB/RAV paradigms for debuffing Zirnitra.
