Many games are about following a story. Certainly jrpgs are heavily biased towards that. Especially FF games. Take the story away and almost noone would play these games. You seem to not care about story. Ok. But many people do care about story a lot, and most people care to various extent.
The market shows as much. If that wasnt true then there wouldnt be so many games around with a heavy focus on story.
It's funny you say that because you could consider Monster Hunter to being a JRPG - even though it's action, and it's 10 times more popular than any JRPG in history - so what's the story of monster hunter?
Edit: Gameplay Always trumps story... every time.
