I have to be honest this was one of the more disappointing parts of the gameplay in the game for me. I ended up just sighing whenever things turned into a fist fight. I think I did actually prefer the quicktime type fist fights in The Witcher 2 to be honest, and I usually hate quicktime things. I didn't like the way you didn't often have much room to move about and how NPCs would walk in the middle of the fight and block you.
***SPOILER WARNING***
I did however like how the fist fighting quests eventually ended, and how you end up fighting a bear and then a troll. Gave me a little smile in the end.
I like fist fighting. I drag out the fights by doing nothing but just counter AND not hitting them afterward. It's like prolonging their painful defeat, like taunting them in the face. Sweet sweet casul fist fighters getting parried at every turn.
Timing is extremely easy, as soon as their hand move press RMB.
You are doing something wrong, he is hitting you :)
Dont get hit - WIN.
But if you want to receive Death March! achievement, do it if you completed all story quests.
You time his strikes; parry to the side or backwards; (great thing about TW3 combat after a parry in fist fighting just like with a sword you'll have a nice strike if you time the attack immediately after in the right "spot") - then you can unload 3,4 maybe 5 light hits on him, or 1-2 lights hits and a hard hit, maybe be able to get a charging Knee to his face but you risk getting floored so I advice you keep the whole "counter punch" idealism
Dodge all his attacks; then counter attack; towards his 45% health he'll begin to be a bit more agressive and even do more damage, at this point after you parry hit him and parry to the opposite direction he steps to circle towards his back - you can totally annihiliate him this way, but just like geralt he will swing a strong brack hand at you if not careful thus keep the same amount of attack timing before parrying back to safetly; keep a medium close distance, enough that you can see he's preparing to attack and get away, not close enough to get clipped and not too far away that he walks you down and you end up against a wall getting pummeled etc.
You'll find this to be cake after you parry the first strike and counter, then rinse and repeat.
Happy Brawling, Gwent Playing, Questing, Monster Hunting and exploring the most fascinating game I've played.
PS: ----Slight Spoiler alert---- it doesn't give away too much about major plot details its a subplot of a main plot quest that involves the possibility to fight in this epic 5 or 6 round arena to the death, in this awesome pit with a roaring crowd... was fantastic just going to talk about it as I believe you can completely miss out on it.
----
in Novigrad; when aiding cleaver finding whoreson junior, for the arena I opted out of aiding his men (despite still helping them....) so I could take part in the epic arena battle that occurs; I believe its 5 or 6? maybe 7? different to the death situations; initially that guy pleads for his life about having a family; then the skellige twins; then I believe it was engregas; then a wyrvern and then this famous GIANT MOFO BEAR; (Once I got him low health and on fire I boxed that bear for a good 10 seconds BEARKNUCKLES LULZ) epic moment; and I don't believe this can be experienced if you aid the dwarves by just going in and murdering everyone which happens anyway;
For the casino I met up with them - and you are given half the reward for meeting them for the casino so I highly suggest you do the arena)
Here is the way to win EVERY SINGLE fist fight in the entire game.
1. Lock onto the enemy closest to you (in a multiple person fist fight you must change priority to closest one)
2. NEVER ATTEMPT TO PARRY
3. If SINGLE TARGET - bait a heavy attack by stepping forward then stepping backwards, when they wind up dodge backwards with down on analogue stick and tap B [Xbox controls]
4. Then after their hit jump forward again and start swinging with fast attack or heavy [whichever you have skill points in, I am fast so I can get 2-3 hits in on ANY opponent]
5. Then after 2-3 hits depending on when the opponent puts their fists up to block, dodge back again and then bait another heavy attack and REPEAT until they are dead.
More advanced skills:
Instead of dodging back, you can dodge roll forward and behind them when they do a heavy attack and get bonus damage on the first hit into their back!
Likewise, previous time I played I beat everybody. The only time I lost was the first time I fought Georgius because I was too low a level. Now when I try, parry is ineffective I can dodge for a while until some drunk walks into the fight and traps me and then I get punched out in 2 punches. Or it's like the game is having a laugh and I get hit by him when I have dodged and am nowhere near him, like literally completely across the ring from him.
This is also happening in fights in Skellige, the guy you agree to let win the first fight (Einar) to impress his girlfriend and whom I never lost to before absolutely smashes me and again hits me when he is completely out of reach. Not sure what's going on but that's it for me, boxing in W2 was far better.
Parry =/= block. *Looks at kNIGHT achievements* No Kaer Modhen Trained achievement, well that makes sense.
I stated the part about parry because others had mentioned it above.
As stated I won every fight in a previous play through so I obviously know how to do the boxing - SO WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT - I am explaining I appear to be encountering a bug that someone else has already mentioned and I have quoted.
