I can't imagine how people with a crap ton of mods deal with the game's updates since every update breaks mods so you have to deal with every single one you installed. It's a nightmare.
Ture, but thats because official modding tools have not been released yet
I have no mods folder in there, saef to just create one?
Ya, the vast majority of mods, you just download, unzip the folder and drop it in your Witcher 3\Mods folder - if you haven't created a Mods folder yet, just go ahead and create one. Just pay attention under the description tab on nexus mods and the mod creator usually explains how to install it. If they don't, usually it's just dropping the mod into the mods folder like I mentioned above (every single mod I run is like that).
I've found Witcher 3 to be easy as heck running mods - I run around ~15-20 or thereabouts and have no issues with any of them. Highly recommended. There are a lot of really cool ones out there.
