Mounted combat is REALLY rough
Honestly, if there is one aspect of this game I really can't stand, it's the terrible mounted combat.

ohhhh...duck off!
Hold the attack button before you attack. ;)
Been playing on the PS4, and while I agree, I also understand why it has to be a bit harder. You are pretty overpowered on horseback, for your sword blows can one-kill dudes pretty easily. As the above user said, charge your attacks and come in a full speed. Once you've killed a dude or two, I always hop off and finish the job.
In all honesty the mounted combat reminds me quite a bit of Mount and Blade, but with a useful slow motion effect. The main problem is that it's kind of hard to perfectly control the horse while fighting.
Ahhh, didn't think to hold the attack button... could really help. Thanks, I'll give it a try.
My issue with horses is the same issue I have with Geralt on foot. Turning is super weird. He doesn't just pivot like a normal person. He likes to walk in tiny circles. This means I end up having to back up like a damn car and then move forward again if I overshoot loot. While riding a horse, it jerks when you're turning instead of moving smoothly to the left or right. I feel like they made a conscious decision to have it this way and I just don't understand why.
...or you could leave your horse entirely behind to fight the bad guys like a man. :P
the slowmo helps alot its quite easy with that one... people ...

Real men use force multipliers.

The mounted combat is an abomination. The slowmo only ♥♥♥♥♥ up any timing you may have had. The random target changing completely ♥♥♥♥♥ up any chance of the game doing what you intended, and target locking an enemy while mounted makes everything even worse. The horse being extremely unresponsive at times, literally going right when you press left, etc. The sword strikes obviously going straight through enemies, while doing no damage. Geralt sheating his weapon after 2 seconds, while you're on your way back to make another pass at attacking. The amount of time it takes before Geralt can ready another attack after finishing the last?

Not to mention the choppy graphics when not sprinting (The tiny "pause" in movement after every single step)

Really.. Only one word can describe the mounted combat in this game: Atrocious.

If you don't notice the things I describe you must be going out of your way not to see them, or you're straight up lying to yourself.
Better than Skyrims at least, got more kills on horse back in my first fight (on horseback) than I did over the whole 750+ hours I've spent in skyrim.
By yeah does have problems.

Now that I have learned to hold the attack button, something I do not remember from the game's tutorials, I think I may be slightly on my way to enjoying this game's dull-as-all-hell combat.

Thanks Teslaron! :ss13ok:

Mounted combat is fun once you figure it out.
Holding down the button helps a lot, but the mounted combat is still terrible. Geralt puts away his sword as soon as he's out of spitting distance, so you can't do rapid fire ride-by attacks on the enemies, and the auto-side-select thing CONSTANTLY messes up.
