Yes it did live up to my expectations.
What hooked me, was the very first sequence with the Griffon, the Pub brawl, and card games. I had no idea the depth of the alchemy and signs would make those fights far more interesting. Monster hunting, bar brawls and card games = Awesome!
Let me ask a simple question, I tried to play W1, but the combat system controls quickly infuriated me, how could that version ever be fun? Steam controller maybe? So I watched the long as playthrough on You-Tube instead, cause I wanted the story. I played all the way through W2, and really only got aggrivated fighting Letho the impossible the first time.
The other thing about W2 that I could never get into was dice. I just simply had no idea what I was doing and had no interest. Gwent however, wow what a great game adaptation... I spent the first 2 hours side tracked playing cards. The only thing it is missing is banter with the person you are playing, while playing them. Anyways. Cheers. GOTY for sure.
Personally, I don't much mind because I'm sure my middle-of-the-road PC couldn't have handled it anyway. Titan X owners, though, touche.
But I was never hyped for it
Hype is the killer of games.
Hype makes us like the games less because we expect hyped games to be the next coming of the gaming jesus christ
I expected the potion system to be better than in Witcher 2 and it wasn't.
I expected the ability system to be better than Witcher 2 and it wasn't.
I expected the combat to be less clunky than Witcher 2 and it very much is, but difficulty took a dump.
I expected the game to be stable and playable and it always was (for me anyway).
I hoped the game would do various other cool new things that I didn't see coming and it mostly didn't. It's basically a prettier Skyrim.
Overall it didn't do anything horrifically bad and didn't do anything mindblowingly new. Is that meeting expectations? I guess? I dunno.
Its not that difficult you just have to keep an eye on the cursor when your engaging foes. I also liked that you had different fighting styles although admittedly near end game i was using group style the most. Alot of people hated it thats why it got changed for the second game, took me ages to adapt to that.
I agree with you about the dice, sometimes you could go on a 10 game losing streak just out of pure dumb luck. Pretty realistic really.
Thats a good idea concerning Gwent, banter, beer drinking etc during your games. I dont think they expected the amount of positive feedback though :) Its barebones compared to MTG or other card games.
That was when I got burn out. Everything before Novigrad was sweet. By the time I did a few quest in Novigrad, I was burn out. Novigrad is a ugly and generic city.
"Novigrad is a ugly and generic city"
Being a contrarian does not make you automatically an independent thinker. Nor agreeing with the mass make you a lemming.
Kool-aid drinkers and haters? The circle of life continues.
It's just the optimization that bothers me. Other than that it's perfect.
