Just leave and come back later.
Hint: you can enter through exit.
There is a place of power on top of the hill, that I think was Igni, so it's worth taking.
If you can make Golden Oriole potion, it will help with not getting damaged by the poison gas, also White Raffard potion that heals a huge amount of health.
Devil's breath bomb is also good to throw at the Leshen while he's burning, for some extra damage (the bomb releases gas that can be ignited, you can even get achievement for doing it 10 times with burning enemy).
Keep rolling to maintain distance, and fire Igni at the Leshen and he will die. The Griffin set is what I'm using primarily, so it's definitely worth it if you like playing with signs.
"Am i doing something wrong?"
Yes. You don't have to kill the Leshen. You can loot the chest to get the gear diagrams and keep running up the stairs. There is an illusion at the top of the stairs that you can dispell with the item Keira Metz gave you. Once dispelled it reveals a back exit.
Thank you. I have been stuck in this mission for four years. My family has assuredly forgotten me, My hair reaches my ankles. all for the Leshen. Thankfully, your advice will help me progress onwards. Maybe I can finally return to my life after this, with griffin armor in tow.
I was walking into that cave hoping the leshen had left, or that I would be able to loot before it arrived, but what actually happened is much better.
I just entered the ekimmaras lair when the leshen showed up. It for some reason was missing 70% health. Still me being lvl 5 and it lvl 20 made it difficult, especially that I had to keep eyes on the ekimmara at the same time. I just barely managed to defeat both. I read the leshen was not supposed to be there at all but above the hill. It just bugs inside the caves for some reason. Guess could be related to the teleporting attack it uses.
There's also a very high level grave hag in the same area, same deal one shot if you're unlucky.
After those nasty experiences I paid a lot more attention to my abilities to maximize everything at every level.
And that's when I started beating monsters showing as level ??? level 12 ish
Second time was in that hellish corridor, he teleported there, I backed away to finish the wraiths, and was nowhere to be found afterwards
I'm gonna go there later and see if he actually died or if not, give him my regards
