warbles of a smitten knight - horse race problem
I'm doing the secondary quest where you participate in the tourney. I'm having some problem with the race course. You should get extra time awarded for hitting the dummies and shooting the targets with the crossbow - however the crossbow targets don't award me any extra time when i hit them, only the dummies (I dont hit those very often, hence my problem). do i need to hit the crossbow targets exactly in the middle? does anyone else has this problem?

I noticed the targets dont move like they do in the parctice run,but they do give ya time.

My problem was the archery, after shooting a couple targets Geralt gets locked in the aim animation so I always loose.Tried a few times with the same crappy result.

Ah now I know what my problem was - I had the exploding crossbow bolts equiped, so thats why the targets did not count :P

well I have a problem with hitting those dummies with sword, I simply cant get ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ time added even when I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ STAND next to the dummy and smashing it with sword from various distances. Really, taking the 2 worst combat systems in game (mounted combat and crossbows) and making a race out of them is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lunacy.

edit: eh nvm, loading earlier save and going though the race helped in my case.

Cheers jing you give me an idea.
Before the fight I had to select xbow with standard bolts,I originally had bombs selected.

Man this DLC can be buggy

Weirdly, everything was going fine in the training then for the real race I had to restart about 10 times because I kept missing the first dummy.

The game is a bit mean, they put most if not all dummy on your left while geralt is right handed. Going a bit out of your way to hit them from the right is better, can still miss some but you don't need them all anyway. Also remember that you can old the attack button for some slowmo and release right before going past the dummy.

As for the crossbow, for some reason exploding bolts (Everything except the basic?) won't work and you can't access the menu in the race, but you now can use the quick access menu to scroll through all available bolts.

Split bolts do seem to be legal for the crossbow targets. I agree that turning the mounted swordplay into a mandatory mechanic is asinine, but for me at least the crossbow is super easy with the slowmo they give you and a mouse. *shrug*

Also, thanks for your advice about the sword targets, Apoc. Big help! :)

Remember if you hold in the sword attack it will slow mo you.

You can hit the dummies easily. When mounted and near a target, and you choose to attack them, the time will slowed, automatically (make sure you hold the LMB).
It's pretty lame that the game never informs us about this ability or move while half of the community struggle on mounted combat.

I just went through the race maybe 30 times on death march just because I kept missing the dummies, and yes it is impossible to finish it without hitting at least half of them. Here is how I finally did it:

1- forget the holding down attack for the slomo effect, it only makes it more complicated. after trying countless times and missing, I just reverted back to the normal hitting routine and it works better. You just cannot grasp how far or how fast geralt swings his sword in the slowmotion mode. Better to just hit attack and i guess the game helps you adjust the aim or something.

2- Never miss the crossbow marks. because you will miss a couple of dummies.

3- Be prepared to get stuck behind fences or better, invisible hitboxes so keep to the center of the road.

Hope this helps.

The game does inform you of the slowmotion thing though - at least it informed me, and I've gone through it on both my playthroughs without any issues thus far.

Not once could I hit the dummies, slowmo, no slowmo nothing. I had to just go by using the crossbow.. also no exploding bolts lol. Anyway after trying 20 times, I gave up and lowered the difficulty to "just story" and with crossbow targets I made it. Apparently this doesn't affect achivements if YOU HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED THE MAIN GAME. IF YOU DIDN"T COMPLETE THE MAIN GAME, DONT CHANGE THE DIFFICULTY!

The crossbow is easy on PC. The problem were the dummies... After many tries, I found out, that in order for the hit to count, I had to release hold of the W button (forward movement). If I held the W button, the hit wouldn't count and I would just swing through the dummy without the hit counting. Most likely a bug. It took me about an hour to find this out.

I hit the dummies more or less consistently, but shooting the crossbow doesn't work. If I hold the MMB, the arming animation plays without a shot. If I tap the MMB, I can see the shooting animation and sound, but there is no bolt or hit.
