Patch 1.31 Issues for a returning player
Hi guys,

I used to be able to run the Witcher 3 at 1080p 60fps without issues but suddenly with this patch I am getting constant FPS drops even after setting everything down to medium and low. I find it happens less in full screen with V-Sync on and limited to 60 frames vs unlimited or border-less windowed. I also have the season pass and all DLC.

The last patch I played on was 1.22 just after Blood & Wine was released. I'm playing the original Witcher 3 Wild hunt, not the GOTY edition.

Anyone know of any fixes or the reason behind this? Any help would be appreciated.

Computer Specs:
MSI GTX 970
AMD FX 8350
16GB DDR3 RAM
Samsung Evo 1TB SSD
Windows 7 64 bit

I always end up with heated arguments over usability of Windows 7 in 2016. Using such an old and broken OS just makes finding actual problems so much more difficult. So my first advice is always - upgrade to Windows 10 (if you have your reasons to stay on W7, fine, don't have to shout at each other about this).

1.30 and 1.31 hotfix did not change anything major in the game engine. Maybe you could try to update video card drivers or look at other programs you are running on background. Antivirus, screencapture, videocalls etcetc, something could be causing perfomance drop.

If you had mods installed, lots of them failed to work properly after 1.30 update. Try removing them all.

Btw, the GOTY edition is exactly same game, with exactly same expansions. It has absolutely nothing new or changed. It is simple repackage of same content for Steam store.

Running an OCed 8370 on Win 10 here. Where and how bad are the frame drops?

I'm running a 290X in the 55-75fps range with most settings on ultra.

I've had it happen when walking through the forest, running over a hill, in the graveyard in velen with the grave hag and some other seemingly random places. They also tank the framerate from 60 to 30, rarely does it hit under 30 but sometimes it only goes as low as 40.

My FX runs TW3 at 20-30% loads and if your FX is stock it should be running at 50-60% loads.

My 290X runs at a constant 100% load and is the reason for my frame rate variances. I do get lower frame rates in the forests than I do in Novigrad.

Hmm. Have you heard of something called the ICC Patcher? I run it on every new program and it can make a big difference. In TW3 it only patched some D3D and nvidia stuff and made little difference in my rig, but it might help your video card out.

I can't say I have heard of it, I'll take a look later when I get home and see if it helps at all. It's a little frustrating because I used to be able to get near constant 60 fps from release onwards to suddenly it not doing the same thing.

I should also mention, sometimes the rain is really tanking the fps now I've had a couple drops where when the new weather starts it dropped as low as 18 for a second or two.

And yeah all my stuff runs at stock, I don't know enough about rig building yet to try and overclock anything.
