His health bar is white, so that means he's classified as a monster. Therefore, silver's required.
I've certainl turned up to fight Detlaff with swords and armour in terrible shape because I'd forgotten to raid the dozens of repair kits from my stash before I set out.
I remember turning up to that massive Hanse place in the swamp with a load of great loot in my inventory. I wanted to use Arachas decoction, so I thought it was a great idea to drop thousands of crowns worth of loot in the bushes near the place...
... I think you know already that I never found it afterwards.
There ARE a few breaks here and there, it's just that for the base game and both big DLCs, story events make those breaks impossible. That means you gotta plan ahead, and it can sometimes be difficult to figure out the right time to take advantage of those breaks. Fortunately, in my case, I was able to get my equipment repaired after the "Tesham Mutna" quest.
If I recall correctly it involves heading to the orphanage that is used by Orianna and working your way back from there.
Maybe it's been patched now, but if you end in a mess like this once that quest has started, give it a try!
It's also fun to run around Beauclair rather than heading straight to the play room. There's lots of stuff to do and see and loot.
Hell, for the sake of aesthetics, I've even been letting Geralt run around in a white shirt, trashy Harlequin novel -cover style. Because as soon as combat starts, I can access inventory and put him in full armor. *shrug*
I got killed by bandits 3 TIMES before realising I was fighting them with a wooden prop sword (from Dandelions's Goon vs Hero Dandelion play)
Don't worry, I've charged into battle with that sword too. I think I realised part way through the fight, though.
I've also sold my mastercrafted swords by accident, because I was trying out a pair of swords I'd looted and had the witcher gear unequipped when I arrived at the merchant. Ooh, the cost to buy them back! Reloaded an earlier save.
If this is a competition to find the most foolish Witcher 3 player ever, I'd like to think I was in the running for a podium place.
ROFL
similar situation happened to me to, but I realized it early when I saw my low damage to them so I ran away, quickly switch swords and continue fight :)
Not only damage was better with that steel sword, but that sound during slashing them too ;-)
