Can Geralt really swim faster than a boat travels? Doesn't look that way to me.
No, but he does have fast swim feature.
Yet, if you consider all the time you spend finding the boat, getting on the boat, sitting down, turning, standing up, jumping off etcetc, compared to just swimming which it is simply holding down direction key. Same thing with horse too, while I understand horse will run faster, I just can't be bothered with it.
Does the boat actually sink? One time it turned on its side so the mast was on the water's surface but it never sank. I got tired of trying to right it and took off swimming.
If your boat is in bad shape when the sirens attack it... Be a good captain and go down with your ship. The bug only takes effect if the boat sinks while Geralt is in the middle of the "dismount" animation. Just wait until the boat sinks, then the crossbow will work as usual.
