Yes, it was conquered by the Nilfgaard.
Witcher 1 has nothing to do with the politics, Geralt has amnesia and is trying to relearn his skills.
Kaer' Morhen is attacked in Witcher 1 by an organisation who steal Witcher secrets. His search for their leader drives the story forward.
Along the way he gets caught up in the Human/ non- human squabbles that are going on.
Do you remember the bookshop owner in Novigrad who claimed a friend left you something?
'A' is also a very large part of Witcher 1.
Well in Witcher 2 you have a myriad web of choice and consequence.
You can choose to side with the Temerian Rebels ( john natalis) , however in Witcher 3 he has went missing so that choice is void.
You can also choose to aid Radovid which makes Temeria his vassal state ( I chose this as I gained him a Temerian wife in Witcher 1)
None of these choices really have bearing on Witcher 3 however as Nilfgaard invades at the end of Witcher 2. The Kingslayer (Letho) was an agent of Emhyr sent to sow chaos in the region, weakening the states.
Nilfgaard invades and swallows up large armounts of Temeria, Radovid pulls back leaving them to their fate. Kadewen ( Doesn't matter if you killed Henselt or not) is weak and Radovid attacks his own ally to bolster his own forces.
So for all intents and purposes Nilfgaard rules Temeria although its shaky.
In Witcher 3 you can change this or remain in the Status Quo.
Aiding Roche makes Temeria a vassal state of Nilfgaard, Aiding Dijkstra or leaving Radovid alone results in Redania being the crown state.
Yes Alvin was Jacques ( The grandmaster) a source of power equal to Ciri.
Basically in TW3 the Velen region is area of Temeria that is currently occupied by Nilfgaard. North is Redania, for example Oxenfurt is Redanian town.
Here is lenghty explanation of hte confilct:
