You can add three of the same kind. They stack.
Oups, misread. There is that exotic merchant very late in the game who offers expensive runes that visually enhance swords on hit... or maybe permanently, 'forgot, 'long time, 'sorry.
Beside, I would search for mods in that area. T'hat sounds very much like a mod thing...

The colour of the runes on the sword depends on which runestone was last added to it so look for the colours of the runes in your inventory. The more runesstones on a sword the more the runes extend down the blade and even onto the hilt for some swords. Unfortunately you only get one colour runes and not 3 different colours for 3 different coloured runestone.

There is also the Runesmith from the Hearts of Stone expansion who will apply runewords that will visually enhance your sword. Replenishment for example caused the sword to glow with the colour of the last sign used.

Some swords also have a visual effect such as Aerondight from Blood & Wine that glows gold when charged and Iris from Hearts of Stone that glows red when charged.
