How do you use axe?
I'm playing Ragnir and get the Katars (watched some vids on combos and quite like em). However the axe I can't work out... I'm fine with Ragnir's axe sigs but the light attacks I always miss, or can't combo.

Are there good axe combos? Is it even worth using over katars (which don't miss at close range)?

Side light into down light is a classic for Axe.
Otherwise Axe is fine with singular hits too.

Just use Recovery when someone else is trying to recover. The Ax covers all sides so it has a chance of killing someone just for trying to jump at you behind.

Slight> Sair is a nice mix-up if someone tries dodging or spot-dodging.

Slight Dlight is outdated because of the slight launch angle change. Now theres two options for axe combos slight jump nair gc dlight which is true at some healths and slight jump nair jump sair which has very few dodge frames between the nair and sair. landing those combos is absolutely necessary to rack up damage and axe is mostly about punishing your opponent for bad moves. The dair is also a decent approach option since you can easily follow it up with a sair, nair or even jump dair. Sair and nlight can be used to build up damage one hit at a time as well. It can gimp faily easily offstage by repeatdly whacking your opponent with dairs and gps. In general its just heavier hitting and longer range than katars. If you keep on missing attacks with axe you should prolly take a look at the hitboxes in training mode. TBH axe hitboxes are absolutely atrocious and dont match the animations very well so understanding where you will hit with them is very important. What weapon you use is all personal choice tho and every weapon is viable however, axe will probably be easier to learn than katars if your just starting out.

Source: my 2s partner is a 2100 ragnir and ive played a decent amount of ulgrim.

axe has literally no combos anymore because it's been getting nerfed despite being among the worst weapons. I don't know why things that are bad get nerfed, but maybe someday the average IQ of people in the forge discord server will at least be a double digit number.

In the meantime, never use side light to approach, because it can be countered easily with a backdash. If you mean to approach then use down air, and every once in a blue moon you can use a falling side air. Otherwise use axe exclusively as a zoning weapon, which is what it is by nature. You can also use it defensively if you want, but it's ideal for zoning.

Also, downlight is one of the best anti-air moves in the game, but don't use it too much because it has a truck load of end lag.

lol thats just wrong slight nair is true and slight nair gc dlight is true at some healths. Granted it is a pretty weak weapon right now but its not nearly as bad as your making it out to be.

Because of you i went right into training mode after reading what you said, and i have to say, you are wrong.
I still manage to get it true at 170 damage with 5 strenght against 5 defense.
As i fail to do it at 180 damage, i have every reason to assume it stops being doably true somewhere between 170 and 180.
Here is a screenshot exactly showing how you have to land the side light for it to work: https://i.imgur.com/vdtBix2.jpg

You have to hit a certain part of the hitbox tho whereas slight nair works regardless of where u hit. It still works but it is "outdated" and regardless slight nair gc dlight is just a way better followup in terms of damage.

I have not stated otherwise.
I just wanted to clarify that the combo is still existent.
Practicality was not much of a concern during my research.

You can use Slight > Nlight into Sair or Slight > nair > Dlight at low health.

Axe has had the highest winrate out of all the weapons all but 4 times since the 2.75 update. I think it is safe to say that it is in no way a weak weapon and may be considered to be too powerful because of this.
I will not give my views on this though, I am not someone who has ever seriously tried axe as a weapon.

win rate doesnt really mean anything. axe is slow and gets parried easily by any other weapon. most slights beat out axe's most nlights beat out axe's and so on. Just today i was going to use a side air on my opponents, but they beat me in startup. One time it was sword, another was lance, then gauntlets, and so on.

where do you get those numbers from anyway? That seems ridiculous honestly, and even if it's true, maybe axe players just end up working harder to deal with their ♥♥♥♥ weapon and have high win rates because of it.

you can change the patch and the ranks that you are looking at.
Axe can still outspeed the hammer Sair though.

The trick with axe is to stay far away from the enemy and time the attacks, I main Ulgrim and I always beat Koji's or fast dex people with axe.

that site counts every queue and even custom games, not just ranked. data from silver and gold also holds more weight than platinum and diamond because there are more players in silver and gold too.
