It wouldn't be impossible technically, but first you'd need a simplier hitbox for objects, second, a proper script cooperation that allows these collision objects(swarm-based) a fast Host/Client exchange. Third, this game would change into a fully coop game, which means, that you cannot fly in different directions. The client has to stay near the host, like the local hosting in ARK works. There you have a destination about a max of 650m to the host until he pulls the client with him, so local hosting like this is a fully coop game mode.
As 650m is no destination in a space game where entire ships can exceed this number in lenght you have to put this in relation of course. Wouldn't call this an entirely different game, when I know that as a client/Commander I have to stay with my host/Admiral.
Of course the campaign wouldn't work this way, as it's made for single player scale, but starting as a small-ship couple and earning credits(shared rewards) together and building at least a deadly dreadnaught constellation would be a great temptation in a lively game like RG.
The final problem we see everywhere: We don't have any skilled network programmers.
Speaking of games with that aim. Star Citizen promises to be that entirely different game altogether.
Just that I'd wish SC could get a proper 3rd person flight mode, (Chairman) Chris Roberts already did that well in Freelancer or DoubleDamage in Rebel Galaxy of course. Atm SC, as open world/first person/space shooter is a bit too clumsy to control for my taste, so I prefer playing Rebel Galaxy, while enjoying the epic feature to setup my own music suit (BSG ftw ;) ). As soon as there's a mod available to change ship models, this is going to be most epic.
It's hard to admit, but there have to be games that are made for SP only, because.. when did you ever had the option to recline in a koop match and enjoy the ambience? You're too focused on progress or communication. I personally enjoy the isolation within my favorite tracks out there in space. Would be great with a companion also, but not necessarily by force. :)
Nevermind, wish you a lot of fun in here.
