Torpedo Buster, Busted [Tip Thread]
After a lot of research and consideration, I've figured out how this achievement actually works by connecting the dots between the words of those who have no issue with this achievement, and those who can't make any progress. Forget your flaks. Lose the lasers. It's all about projectiles. A projectile connecting directly needs to coincide with the torpedo breaking to count toward the achievement.

"What the hell do you mean by that," the Mysterious Second Party asks, bewildered: "if I destroy torpedoes, it should count, right? If I have any progress, that means I did something right at some point, doesn't it?" Yes, but we're not talking about something with common sense. Games are run by computers. Computers use direct, exact logic. My bet, based on the results of testing my hypothesis, is that the achievement is coded as follows: if a projectile death (a despawn via reaching the projectile's set parameters, such as hitting an entity) breaks a torpedo, one point is added to the necessary 500 to unlock the achievement.

This is why people think you need to use flak, because there's a loophole in this logic. Flak causes an explosion on projectile death, but the projectile can still hit something directly; so, when a flak projectile hits something like a ship or fighter directly, and the explosion that results breaks a torpedo, the achievement's logic is met, and the point is added. However: if a flak shot dies mid-flight as it's designed to, the explosion is spawned, which then breaks torpedoes. The logic of the achievement, with my theory, wouldn't recognize the explosion as a projectile dying, which means that any torpedoes that are destroyed by the explosion flak spawns don't get counted toward the achievement, resulting in people's usual confusion.

"Stop acting like you know what people are thinking and tell me how to get the achievement already." Okay, ♥♥♥♥, you don't need to be rude. To get the achievement, just equip things like Pulse turrets with the Ordinance Targeting component. Hold right click to focus (that's the part that actually makes use of Ordinance Targeting and nothing else), target the torpedoes directly with the pulse turrets, and shoot them. For every explosive named Torpedo, or ___ Torpedo for race-specific variants, you'll actually get a point for breaking it as it was technically intended to happen.

tl;dr The achievement uses bad logic to check progress, just use the zoomed-in mode on pulse turrets with Ordinance Targeting installed and it works.

Sure thing c:
I just made this into a guide for those who prefer that, and so people can see it more easily. If anyone reads this, maybe also go over to that and help me get visibility for people who are still lost on this and might not see this thread! c:
