Since this game was only made of 2 people, it has a lot less to do than freelancer, but for the most part it is an awesome game. Well worth the money.
Rebel Galaxy = 2D space
RG has its charms, to be sure. But I don't think one need be religious to find the lack of a third dimension to be an issue. It's more arcade-like than most space sims.
There are other space sims that do broadside combat in 3D space. And the lack of a third dimension doesn't only apply to combat, but to everything you do in space, specifically flying from point A to B.
Don't get me wrong, I like REBEL GALAXY. I had doubts at first, but I allowed myself to be persuaded to try it, and I get it. It's a charming game. But it's most like FREELANCER in what you do on the station, rather than what you do in the ship.
The flow of RG is the same as FL, you have a story arc, which you can follow, or you can pick missions or free roam as you like. Some people are lawful, others are lawless. There are lawful stations and outlaw stations. You can make money in all sorts of ways, and it all starts and ends with a trip to the bar with a 3D bartender, so in that way the siminlarity is striking.
On the other hand, Freelancer had a much better trading interface. RG's dynamic pricing is nice, with commodity prices changing in response to events (which you can influence, to some extent), but if you want to find a specific commodity to buy it can be a real chore. Don't expect to make a fortune buying and selling goods in this game. The real money is made in missions (merchant and mercenary missions in particular).
Nobody on this planet has enough fingers to play that.

Your ship and other capitals move in 2D, while smaller fighters and gunships move in 3D around you. Your part in the combat as a capital-scale ship is heavily focused on broadsides, but you have turrets which can target freely in 3 dimensions (tracking fighters and/or enemy capships).
There are other elements which are a lot more Freelancer-like, but if you're after true 3D movement, it's definitely not going to show up here. I will say the game is amazing, but a lot of people do find that enough of a sticking point that it's worth being clear and honest. The gameplay is great, but it's not traditional fighter sim combat, and it works because of it, not in spite of it.
I've tried the X series games, but the learning curve demands more than i want to put into it. Do you know of anywhere i can download freelancer ( legit download )? I will most likely get RG here soon was hoping it would be part of the "Exploration sale". but it just came out so full price is fine. I like to support games that are made by gamers. Most of the AAA Devs games over the last few years have been pretty weak.
If you want to scratch your Freelancer itch the best way to go is to get the Discovery Freelancer mod.
