I loved Freelancer, is this game anything like it?

Somewhat. Instead of a fighter you control bigger ships. You start of in a corvette and can upgrade to frigates, destroyers and dreadnoughts!

Since this game was only made of 2 people, it has a lot less to do than freelancer, but for the most part it is an awesome game. Well worth the money.

If you love freelancer, you will love this game.
Similar vibe and the trading system is very similar. The main difference is the combat. If you're absolutely religious about 3-D space sim-style combat you'll be disappointed but if you're open minded about things you might just enjoy it.

Freelancer = 3D space
Rebel Galaxy = 2D space

RG has its charms, to be sure. But I don't think one need be religious to find the lack of a third dimension to be an issue. It's more arcade-like than most space sims.

Except it isn't an issue, its a design decision that allows the combat to work the way it does.

There are other space sims that do broadside combat in 3D space. And the lack of a third dimension doesn't only apply to combat, but to everything you do in space, specifically flying from point A to B.

Don't get me wrong, I like REBEL GALAXY. I had doubts at first, but I allowed myself to be persuaded to try it, and I get it. It's a charming game. But it's most like FREELANCER in what you do on the station, rather than what you do in the ship.

I have only have 80 mins in RG so far, so who the f*** am I to barge in? I have a gajillion freelancer hours though, and my first impression is that RG feels like freelancer, but doesn't play like freelancer. All the above posts explain the mechanical differences, so let me touch upon the thematic similarities.
The flow of RG is the same as FL, you have a story arc, which you can follow, or you can pick missions or free roam as you like. Some people are lawful, others are lawless. There are lawful stations and outlaw stations. You can make money in all sorts of ways, and it all starts and ends with a trip to the bar with a 3D bartender, so in that way the siminlarity is striking.
I was worried about the 2d nature of RG combat but it works quite well. RG combat is different from Freelancer in that in RG your turrets will fire automatically (and you can choose what types of enemy they fire at), while you concentrate on positioning and using broadsides. There's also a bit more weapons variety than Freelancer.

On the other hand, Freelancer had a much better trading interface. RG's dynamic pricing is nice, with commodity prices changing in response to events (which you can influence, to some extent), but if you want to find a specific commodity to buy it can be a real chore. Don't expect to make a fortune buying and selling goods in this game. The real money is made in missions (merchant and mercenary missions in particular).

As a person that has played those, I can say the controls for them are absolutely awful.

Nobody on this planet has enough fingers to play that.

This game is like Sid Meier's Pirates! (Or Sid Ubisoft's Pirates! Creed... I mean Black Flag) with a space theme instead of the age of sail.

Your ship and other capitals move in 2D, while smaller fighters and gunships move in 3D around you. Your part in the combat as a capital-scale ship is heavily focused on broadsides, but you have turrets which can target freely in 3 dimensions (tracking fighters and/or enemy capships).

There are other elements which are a lot more Freelancer-like, but if you're after true 3D movement, it's definitely not going to show up here. I will say the game is amazing, but a lot of people do find that enough of a sticking point that it's worth being clear and honest. The gameplay is great, but it's not traditional fighter sim combat, and it works because of it, not in spite of it.

I've tried the X series games, but the learning curve demands more than i want to put into it. Do you know of anywhere i can download freelancer ( legit download )? I will most likely get RG here soon was hoping it would be part of the "Exploration sale". but it just came out so full price is fine. I like to support games that are made by gamers. Most of the AAA Devs games over the last few years have been pretty weak.
I'm not aware of anywhere you can buy Freelancer legit other than second-hand via Amazon or the like, you will have to source it through, ahem, other means.

If you want to scratch your Freelancer itch the best way to go is to get the Discovery Freelancer mod.
