Get a laser, point it at a mineable space rock, and shoot it till it blows up.

You can mine with the default scatter gun by manually aiming and firing at the astroids. You'll overheat your gun 2-3 times before the astroid blows. At this point, having a tractor beam, you will hold A on the controller in order to grab the mineral. However, you will likely only get x1 of the mineral. Eventually you want to have a mining laser and some software that will give you a higher multiplier of the mineral. A quick search of these forums will give you more of an idea.

Not all the rocks will give ores though.
You'll have to PULSE first to see which rocks have ores inside, then you have to SCAN them to see which kind of ore is inside, then you have to laser them to dust in order to collect the ore.

I'm finding that mining is not a really good way to earn your credits, the good $ ores are very scarce. Doing missions and blasting pirates is usually more rewarding. At least in the first two star systems.

Still have to check the others.

Mining laser, scan, fire, wait, fire, collect. Not all give resources, even some of the ones that say they do. Some however give some really good resources that are worth some bank. I have done mostly mining in my game, with some side missions and fighting. I have the starting ship pretty much maxxed out, except for a couple things...

Thanks for having this discussion, I wasn't even aware you could mine without a mining laser.

Nah. Nothing wrong with asking questions.
Transponder spikes ftw btw. Lots of info in transponders.

Tip: Check out ice fields with mining lasers and a fault tracker. And it seems stations that have war status pay loads for purified water and meteoric diamonds.

Btw, anyone else unable to switch between mining lasers and other beam-type turrets? For example: If I have my viridian turret along with mining lasers, I can only control the viridian turret. Not sure if it's a bug or intentional. I am able to switch between my missles, though.

I wonder how to control only a mining turret myself...
Anyone with an answer please reply :)

Mining laser, scan the asteroid belt and destroy the asteroids with loot intside of them and pick it up. Early on... it is NOT WORTH IT. HAHAH in some ways it seems broken - but if u want to spend a few hours to make a few K - go for it :)

I currently use 2 MK particle lasers and a mining laser and asteroids go boom pretty fast - but i gave up on mining. I only mine, if my mission has me deep in an asteroid field and as I am leaving I scan for asteroid loot and mine them on the way out.

This.

Not sure if it works properly, but when I press 3, it selects a random turret, but 4 has, for me so far, ALWAYS selected a mining laser.

3 cycles projectile turrets, 4 cycles beam and 1 cycles missile. I'm unable to cycle through beam turrets, or projectile. I assumed it was supposed to be like cycling missile.

Ah, so far I've pretty consistently been using pulse turrets and one mining laser. That's probably why it worked for me.

I've heard that mining lasers (if they can) will fire on asteroids even if you have the "wrong" turret selected. So maybe try that?

It does. I just can't see where I'm shooting sometimes, because the pov is on the wrong turret(s).
