I did a few random missions and then killed him - and yes I upgraded some of my equipment.
I think lasers are good for short range fights and seem over powered early on - but they are a bit expensive. You can enter a station and look for work - get easy work until you can afford better equipment. At a bar - hire a merc! A friend helping you out is so useful!
My reccomendations is pick up a few mission boad jobs to do inbetween trade runs- check stations for out of stock items and you can make alot of early game money fast
Did not seem to be that difficult, at least for me. Try hit and run strategy if your shield is down, run away a bit and let your merc do the fighting, then come back. Seems to work for me.
That was all it took for me. You'll ideally want a tractor and deflector, and the tractor makes it easier to make the money to get a deflector, so when you get the mission option, that's what I'd go with.
