Rebel Galaxy vs. Elite Dangerous
Let me pose the question better.

I only have time to play ONE game at a time, which one should it be?

Elite: Dangerous is a space adventure, trading, and combat simulator

Rebel Galaxy is a space trading and combat simulation video game

Yet everyone else says: THEYRENOTHINGALIKEOMFGHOWCANYOUBESOSTUPIDTHEYRE BOTHGOODGAMESINTHEIROWNWAYBAAAAAA

'Cept Elite is 6/10 and rebel is 9/10 on steam... I like strategy games. I understand everyone says they're completely different styles of games, but most descriptions of the game seem to be space trading fighting...

So, yeah, I can only play one game at a time even with dual monitors (sad I KNOW!), which should I start with?

I haven't tried Elite Dangerous so I can't comment on it. I will say that I have enjoyed this little game more more than any game I have played in a long time.

Annother indie game you might want to check out is Space Pirates and Zombies and Bounty Hunters. It don't have much trading in it (other than getting weapon plans) so it is bascially a 2D top down shooter set in a large randomly generated Galaxy.

Hello, Loki

Well As much as I really do want the Game "Elite Dangerous" I just can't afford it anytime soon sadly, so I can't comment on that title. :steamsad:

However, I can say, I've only just bought "Rebel Galaxy" this week, and the little experience I have had with it, Hand on my heart, It's a real great game, if you love these type of games.(I do) :steammocking:

I love cruising around the Universe, answering Distress Beacons & kicking the cr+p out of the bad guys, missions, upgrading my ships & following the story Etc.
I'm not sure what "Elite Dangerous" is like, But I really must try get it sometime soon.

"If you love space Combat, Then I'd say go ahead pal, and buy it.. you'll not regreat it, If that's the type a game you love"

They're nothing alike...

So let me put it this way: do you enjoy flying jet fighters through space in first person, or do you enjoy flying capital ships on a 2D plane in third person?

Considering you mention being strapped for time I'd recommend Rebel Galaxy. A big chunk of Elite's 6/10 come from people without the time or patience to enjoy a game with a steeper difficulty curve and much slower pace. RG on the other hand is even more accessible than Freelancer.

Damn, and freelancer was bad ass, thanks. i didn't want to play an ogame sim.

Well, I played 8 hours in Elite, just trying to land a ship. Some people can enjoy it. I dont. Rebel Galaxy is easier, and more fun. Choose Elite if you just have about 200-300 hours free to spend.

I DO, but why? I don't get how people can be like these games are not a like at all. I played borderlands and I was like "this is like diablo". Those people would say, THEY'RE NOTHING ALIKE!!!

I see idiots. But when asked, which would you rather play, I think we all know the answer... Portal.

The difference here is you haven't played both Elite and RG, have you? So I'll excuse the ignorant comment you pulled out of your ass. Borderlands is like diablo, yes, and RG is nothing like Elite.

Go play Portal then, I dunno.

Because Rebel Galaxy isn't played from the cockpit, it's restricted to a 2D plane, has a naval approach to combat, and is more accessible than Elite. Just because two games are about spaceships that trade and fight doesn't mean they will play any similar, in fact, RG is closer to Sea Dogs than to Elite gameplay wise.

To answer your question then, people say those games play differently because they do play differently.

RG is no simulator I d call it an arcade shooter with a Sci-fi capital ship topic.

just like command and conquer renegade is nothing like command and conquer. It's hard to look at perspective as not being part of genere elements for most people. like a 3rd person shooter is not like a first person shooter. either way, a lot of people take offense to the games being related in ANY way, although the offcial game description for both games is

Elite: Dangerous is a space adventure, trading, and combat simulator

Rebel Galaxy is a space trading and combat simulation video game

You can see where i get my "ignorant comment pulled out of my ass". or as I said before "THEYRENOTHINGALIKEOMFGHOWCANYOUBESOSTUPIDTHEYRE BOTHGOODGAMESINTHEIROWNWAYBAAAAAA"

Yeah, havn't played the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ games, just read the descriptions.

Regarding the OP, yes, in essence both Elite and RG do a lot of the same stuff, combat, trade, mine. Elite is pretty much a stuffy long term grind with yearly cash infusions for half-done content updates. Elite is visually stunning, but repetitive and lacks flair.

RG has an attitude, personality, a bit of life to it. It's smaller in scope than Elite, but I'm sure I'll be done with Elite long before I explore all 400 billion of its solar systems.

RG is small, fun, sandboxy and a 3rd of the price of Elite. RG has a shorter learning curve. Either game will be a big grind after a while, though.

god, I am too old to grind. thanks, that clears up a lot. thanks again.
Elite seems to be like a medium priced European sports car. You might be able to get some enjoyment out of it but it's going to take quite a bit of time and work to get to where it's enjoyable. Rebel Galaxy is a second hand Corvette your buddy fixed up and got into good enough shape to go cruising down to the beach with. Both are going to get you somewhere. It just depends on whether spending months and months looking for parts and tweaking until you're able to hit the autobahn is your thing or if you just want to hop into your whip, pop some rebel rock into the stereo and find a party or three to crash.

For the outburts there, saying "YEAH OMG I know Doom and Total War are different, but now compare them." doesn't make it more valid, just as bus being red and teacup being red (Or in space as the case might be) doesn't mean they are basically the same :P

ED is a space sim, probably the most sim-like sace sim around at the moment, serious, big and quite possibly boring for some. It's not action-to-action, it's charts, travelling, maintaining shps and occasional shooting, where RG is not a sim at all, it's most of all arcady naval combat game aiming for fun more so than any kind of simulation. Truth is, noone would even think of comparing the two if they had different aesthetics. You ever wanted to be a long-distance trucker or commercial plane pilot... in space? ED. You like naval side-to-side capital ship combat? RG.

Might be making ED sound bad, but it's very pretty and very relaxing, but you do need certain mindset to like this type of a game. Not everyone can get their kicks from crossing half the galaxy over several hours, just so they can get to Sol, recharge their ship's fuel store next to Sun, smugly orbit Earth for a while and giggle at Uranus while leaving.
