They never wanted the capital ship gameplay. They've always wanted a really cool cockpit-based game like Wing Commander:Privateer (RGO's main inspiration). The ONLY reason they went with broadsides was because there seemed to be a lot of cockpit-based space games coming out around the time they would have come out with RG. Turns out there's plenty of room for those kind of games so they made one. They aren't really into the kind of game Rebel Galaxy is. It was just a compromise they no longer feel they need to make.
Sorry for everyone who really liked the first game-I do, too-but that's not the kind of game they want to make. Travis & Erich (and Howie) are much bigger fans of epic space dogfighters.
Really!? Are you their agent? How do you know what they want? Specially now that they actually made the "dogfighter" game? Do you have a crystal ball? One that actually works? Can you read minds?
Know what... I don't care.
Uh aside from my being good friends with Eric & Travis since 2009 they've stated it in numerous interviews and in various streams.
Seriously. While I don't presume to speak for them I know what they've told me and others plenty of times. I was in the first games friends & family only alpha and spent a bunch of time talking with both Eric & Travis over what their motivations & plans were both before & after RG came out. Rebel Galaxy:Outlaw's style was a foregone conclusion. They wanted to remake Wing Commander:Privateer. In fact they even did so-at least in a small way-as an April Fools joke.
It's not like they haven't gone out of their way to wear their cockpit-space fighter-loving hearts on their sleeves.
Broadsides was a lot of fun, and easy to play, which many 'cockpit' games cannot pull off. It may not be in their plans, which I empathize with, but dang, if the original RG game was updated with a good story line, sub-stories, and different star systems, the game would really do well I think. I am assuming the lackluster original RG sold well in its current state, so I don't think it is much of a stretch to make that assumption.
Uhm... Any chance of some inside as to when to expect it on Steam?
Pretty please?
Btw, Mechwarrior 5 is NOT Epic exclusive - you can buy and play in on any Windows 10 PC via Microsoft Store. It is also available in US via Xbox Games Pass for PC beta.
"12 months from launch, or around August 2020."

Full broadside! Sometimes I don't even bother with the broadsides against weak ships and just sit back watching the turrets mulch the enemies down. So satisfying.
