No idea, though you can use Gamepads...

However, Keyboard & Mouse are the best options to play this game.
You can ask anyone that plays this, and out of 100, I'd say at least 90+% use K&M.

There is no Up or down, so a joystick I'd say is over kill for this game.

Actually most people use controller because that's what it was designed for. That said keyboard and mouse work fine, too. It wasn't designed for use with a joystick so peoples mileage may vary there.

Not a standard space sim like say Xsereis, compare it more to the ship mechanics of Assasins Creed 4 Black Flag. So no i doubt a Joystick would work.

There is only a couple of ways when good HOTAS won't worth the effort for space sim it should be aracde like 2D or something turn based. I have plenty of axis for pitch\yawn\roll as well as for directional thrusters I play Elite with it like a charm. It's VERY strange to make a space sim w\o native controller support...
