Can you uh, not fly up and down?
I don't know the proper terminology, but can you just only steer left and right? No yaw / pitch?

Correct. In fact, no capital ship can, only fighters/gunships.
Combat is more Assassins Creed: Black Flag inspired than 3-D space sim inspired.

It is intended for a mouse and keyboard, not a joystick. G buy Elite Dangerous if you want to spend a few hundred dollars on control sticks to play your 20 dollar video game.

I don't think its a bad thing though. Yeah, your in space, and you should be able to, BUT it works for what they are doing with the game. The combat is fun, and I think if they whent Z axis, the combat would not work any where near as well as it dose.

Well the game suggests you play with a controller, but I use mouse and keyboard and it feels like it was perfectly designed for that control scheme to me.
But you're right, it's definitely not a game for flight stick controls. That's more for elite dangerous kind of space flight game.

fully realized 3D space is tricky at best, and very hard to impliment in a cohesive and fun way.

for this game it would make it seem a bit weird without being able to spin and slide the ship around as well, that would create a whole can of worms problems with the way the fighting and gameplay overall is currently setup.

the game does needs to incorporate everyting into the game fully and get rid of the pre-game setup stuff, as well as adding more customizations to the game keybindings and such...

I used to be in the "No 3D???!! WTF!!!" boat. Really wanted a fully 3D game and this 2D did put me off for a long time. I did evetually get the game during a sale a few months later and as someone who was sick and tired of so many space games being 2D I gotta say I absolutely love this game. May also have helped that I wasn't specifically looking for a 3D space game at the time of the sale, but still.

There are veeeery few times I felt that the game was missing the 3D aspect cause of the way the games is designed it just fits the 2D grid so well that you don't really think about it most of the time.

Pfft I'm sure I'll be the one laughing when Star Citizen is released in a year or two.
