Nice one. I thought about something like you put music files into the game and those synchronize with action, like battle music changes etc. However it's always nice to get some new cool music.
I dropped the game because I got mega dissapointed by game mechanics esp sideways fighting, it felt like they moved some sea game to the space. I was hoping for something like Everspace mechanics.
The rest of us rather enjoy the broadsides shooting of our battleships and dreadnaughts. Where 'up and down' are not important.
Madoka Bad Apple
Area 88 Mission Fuga
three Saints Row 4 Dubstep Gun fx
Bounds of the Universe by Ivan Torrent
several custom *ogg files i made with Music Maker Jam
aaand a few Gorillaz album picks.
pretty much went off the cowboy feel but i regret nothing.
just specify the folder path in the settings window so the game can find your custom tunes.
When beginning my fun romp through the cosmos in my Mk.VI (In all areas) Dreadnought (Bounty scan, mission list scan, cruising and answering distress calls):

My theme with this tune: "I am a simple man. I have dreadnought, I dread naught."
This also doubles as good "Just cruising around."/"Space Galavanting" music, if you want it for Custom Soundtrack. I first heard this tune in an episode of Top Gear. Loved it, found it, enjoying it in SPA-A-A-A-CE!!!!
And for the Custom Soundtrackers (Save/extract/input):
Yodel your way through Hyperspace

Or maybe something with a little bit more energy/gusto

Of course, you can't go wrong with some Dynatron, when spacefaring:

EDIT:
For added fun, for those into mixing tunes:
Have the Epic Hybrid Action & Sci-Fi music playing on one channel, and the 2001: Funky Odysee (Also Sprach Zarathustra), among others, in another channel. Have the Epic Sci-Fi Music playing (100%) for a good while, until it gets to a good buildup to epic-ness. As the Epic Music is building up, get 2001 started, and slowly bring it into the mix (0%-25% volume, and work on aligning/syncing them up), then when you can really hear them both line up, start the mix (A-B %: 100-25 > 50-50 > 25-75 > 0-100). And that's pretty much me in a dreadnought in space, in a nutshell.
"Yeah yeah, epic space opera and all that crap. It's too noisy out! Let's get this crap over with already." (As the Flagship/Pirate King Capital Ship explodes at "Daaa-DAaa-DAAAa... BAD-DAAA!!!!" part of Channel-B (2001), followed up by the rest of the fleet getting wiped out just as rapidly (and exploding in tune to the music?).)
Bonus points for anyone who immediately thought of this while reading my post:

Dune 2000 has some good music in it, too. I'll begin with some great ambient/Idle music.

This has a good assortment of tracks for use. Some tracks should work well for idle music.
Phantasy Star Online

It has some good In-Station Starbase music, as well as combat music, and a bit of other categories
