Games like Rebel Galaxy?
I know Travis is working on a fun-looking new project, but until then, what games do you recommend that have similar qualities?

The qualities that I like are:
1. Free roam / pick your own battles (game doesn't stop you from getting into fights that are "over your head")
2. Upgrades / customization (The ability to focus on any chosen upgrade path ie. all-mobility, all-tank, passifist of bloodlusting-merc)
3. Bonus - projectile-based combat. Whether it's medieval bows and arrows or moon-sized artillery, it's just plain fun to line up a shot and hunt your opponent with split-second trajectory judgements. Games which feature this kind of combat are fun)

What other games have these qualities, old or new?

Take a look at Mount and Blade: Warband (or any of the Mount and Blade series).

2D goodies:
Space Rangers HD (highly recommended, all-in-one game)
Battlevoid: Harbinger (of roguelike flavor)
Star Control 2, Wing Commander: Privateer and AC: Black Flag are the games that inspired it. They're all worth playing (even the older games). Check out Space Pirates and Zombies. Different style of game play but similar feel.

Also worth a look at Starpoint Gemini 2, and Warlords. Warlords is still in Early Access, but already cleaning up a few of the niggling annoyances of SG2. Bug-related issues still crop up enough to make me want to wait a little bit longer, though.

They have the added bonus of also being set in space, although a very different type of space from RG's setting.

Huh, am I missing something here, isn't Mount and Blade Warband a terrestrial game, not space.

Assassins Creed: Black Flag takes place on a planet yet it inspired the combat in this game. Moiunt & Blade shares a lot of game elements with this game as far as wandering enemies, the kinds of missions you go on, etc. Also keep in mind that while RG is set in space the game takes place on a 2-D plane. Just like Mount & Blade.

Yes, you're missing this part of the OP:

Well, the OP didn't say anything about space. He was looking for certain qualities, which M&B has, and even mentioned medieval projectiles (which M&B also has). :)

Mount and Blade is an excellent game and a good recommendation. Yes it fits my request - though I've played it to death already.

Zidders, Thanks mentioning Black Flag! Because of you, I went and booted it up again. I already owned it, but stopped playing long ago when the linear tutorial seemed to drag on too long. I had no idea about the open roaming. It's exactly what I was looking for! Although It's incredibly clunky and glitchy, and 90% of my deaths come from the unresponsive, unpredictable controls. It takes some patience, but it's a game I think I can get some enjoyment out of.

Looks like I'll also have to check out Star Control and Wing Commander; never played those either.

The Escape Velocity series is about the most like this. Very old, but loads of fun. I'm always looking for games like them, which is what drew me to try Rebel Galaxy. Just started RG so not too sure what the differenes will be, but the Escape Velocities had large galaxies with multiple mission strings and choices of different sides, ability to be pirate/trader/government freelancer, modding, trajectory rockets and guided missiles, fighters freighters and warships to buy... The first two were Mac-exclusive, but Escape Velocity Nova has Windows as well and the first two games were ported to it as mods.

Have you seen Endless Sky? direct inspiration from EV, and it's free

Don't forget Freelancer which was also done by the same guy who did the Wing Commander series, Chris Roberts. And he is back doing his life long dream game Star Citizen however the PC likely has not been invented yet that will be able to play it on max settings...you can check it out here though... https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/

I would say starpoint gemini 2 or warlord.

gemini 2 is filled with content. They released the first game as a dlc for it.
warlord will be a much bigger game then rebel galaxy and gemini 2.

Thinking freespace might fit, is more FPS/simulator.

Great space combat tho.

Edit: Sorry no free roam in that game.
