1. It's a classic 4X, surely top-3 during its era (2014 - 2017), and probably top-100 all-time.
2. It's old and dead, hence it's cheap. You can get all of it for -90% off during sales.
Some caveats:
- It's so old that it may not play nicely with modern Win 11, DX 11+, Core i7s, Linux, etc.
A tiny fraction of players (who still play it) report hardware errors that prevent launch.
If you're one of them, tough luck.
- You may discover that you despise 4Xes.
- You may discover that you love Civ-type 4Xes, but hate Amplitude EL-type 4Xes.
Anyways, it's available on steep sale.
It might even be free, if Amplitude has rotated it into their give away for free subset.
yeah i might wait for a sale, but no idea how often it goes on sale. and i have no idea how to get it for free if that's still even a thing thats offered. i know that there is a community patch, so i will probably download that if/when i get the game
the games really not that great objectively but what do i know about 4x's
this is all i can say: i have never played 4x's, never really liked them, hate Civ6, and i played this and loved it. If the combat for endless legends was better i would still be playing it.
The creativity, the music, the environment. this is a game to pop a couple perc's to and just relax (lol)
if endless legends was a classic RTS (like warcraft/starcraft) i think it would've sold 100million copys. it has an opportunity in the wake of Stormgate (which WILL bring rts genre back into the spotlight mark my words)
Emulate civ1 and 2 for consoles?
Cultist - They get super cities that are impossible to take over early game. you will be stuck with them if they are next to you.
Mykara - They constantly terraform everything on the map making life hard.
The factions in the game all play drastically different and all have a unique ways of playing / having their own unique mechanics. They are all fun IMO.
Outside of the factions, the overall mechanics of the game I think is a very good mix of typical 4x fair and narrative RPG elements. While it is not quite as detailed and in depth mechanically as some 4x there are quests, item builds, and neutral faction interactions that all give it a different more narrative play that I think stands out really well. And those narrative bits, I think, are well written and are interesting. With each faction having their own unique overall narrative.
HOWEVER, the down sides are the game is old. (might not be 100% compatible with some hardware)
But game play wise I think the biggest complaint I have about it is the game plays slow. Not from a mechanics standpoint, but from a UI and game speed itself standpoint. There is a lot of animations in game that cannot really be skipped or sped up and that makes it so there is a rather slow pace just navigating through the game, outside of the game mechanics themselves. That can make a the game a little more tedious than it really should be.
On sale I would say it is 100% worth, given it works for you. Since OP has never played a 4x? That kinda depends. I think it is a really good 4x, and one a new person could get into, but you have to be patient with it and accept that is will be a little slow and tedious to play. If you have experience playing older games that generally have a slower overall pace, specially old cRPGs, than I would say you may like it very much. But if you do not like that and cannot stand that slower pace, than you probably want to pass.
Perhaps this combat guide series is of use for you?

From the resource system to the city/region mechanics, to the minor race mechanics, the unique factions and abilities ... to the water-based combat/movement/environment systems ... to the story-driven questing and end game options ... to the ability to design units, acquire weapons and artifacts, and make your heroes unique and interesting ... the game has a metric ton of content.
Regarding the combat system: The combat system is unique, fun, and quite interesting. In fact, I favor it these days over the combat systems in many other 4X games, which are often bogged down by a "too much detail" and "one-unit-at-a-time paralysis". Look at AoW4, for example--the combat system in that game is interesting at first, but quickly becomes tiresome. The battles just take way too long and are hopelessly repetitive, which is why many people just AutoResolve everything in AoW4.
Endless Legend uses a hybrid system, which is based around issuing orders each round. You have total control over your units, despite what many detractors might say. (Many people are just too lazy to learn how the system works.) And the system plays out, in some ways, like a Total War game, in that you don't have to painstakingly move every single unit, every single square--instead, the battle plays out based on the orders you give, which gives it a more cinematic quality ... and it doesn't get "bogged down" in the same "one-unit-at-a-time paralysis" you see in other 4X games. Battles are quicker, can end in stalemate, and are often decided by tactics and gear, instead of just overwhelming numbers.
