Breaking the siege
Am I missing something obvious, or garrison can't break siege on it's own and besiegers have to be attacked with an army from outside the city?

Maybe garrison on its own cant do anything, but you can always "make new army" from that garrison, and destroy enemies from inside :3

Yes the garrisoned units are apparently off duty all the time and home with the families watching Shrek with the kids. You gotta ring em up.

Making an army doesn't seem to work either. That's what I was doing in the first place.

I can't order them to attack, or do anything for that matter.

I think the only hope might be the hero that can pass through siege re trade. I haven't tried it but those heroes might be able to elad an army out too? If anyone has tried it let us know. I have lost games by having my two cities sieged by roaming armies and then having winter hit. The dust reduction caused the auto sell of units so I no longer had any fighting units and the game was over. I normally pacify any and all cities I find in a certain distance to prevent that so I can build an army to fight with later.

only time i could not attack a sieging roaming army from within the sieged city was when a temple ruins blocked my units path. To point out, a cities militia will not be able to attack, but your garrisoned troops can be activated and used to attack. I dont bother with regular troops, i only use 2 or 3 mercs. 1 Ended, 1 Minataur and 1 Demon works best.

good luck.

edit: plus they all have 6 movement so linking them up for an offensive is fast and easy.

Well I continued my saved game and a funny thing happened on the way to the... My main army was rebuilidng and had 4 units and the hero. It had moved just outside the city center but still in the city boundaries and a roving army moved in and put it under siege. I cannot attack out fro mthe city now. The only saving gracw is I had just built a unit in another city and am bringing it over to initiate an attack from outsie that hopefully will include the army in the city.

-Update.. I figured out why I could not attack. As stated above on one route out there are temple ruins. on the other side a glassteel deposit within city boundaries in the path of the army. What I had not tried was moving to the city centre as the enemy army was right beside it. Once there I attacked outward and broke the siege. So ruins and resources besides cliffs block movement.

Resurrecting this thread. I am just stuck in similar situation, but nothing works.

A city is besieged by a roving army. Inside city I have leader and troops, made into their own army. I wish to attack the besiegers.

Having selected my army: Pointer turns red if over besiegers, but nothing happens if I click to attack. Pointer turns blue over other hexes outside, but if I click no movement occurs. I do not have any blocking terrain like cliffs/ruins/resources.

So now what?? :(

Well, never mind. My experience might help others. I found I needed first to click to move the units to another tile within the city, then I was able to attack. Far from obvious. So, you may need to click around a bit to find what is an acceptable launch tile for your attack....

The solution is like jonbrave wrote. Create new army from units in city and first (!!!!!) move close to the enemy army within (!!!!) your city (-tiles). Then attack.

Only possible, if route to sieging army is not unpassable (i.e. blocking ruin, or enemy army has got flying units only and lays siege up from cliffs).

If you select all your garrison to attack with, you won't benefit from the defence bonuses the city and other military buildings give you. Attack with one unit only, and the rest of the garrison will join the fight, but they will have all the bonuses your city and any military upgrades give you.

So if my city is being seiged, and I send an exterior army to attack the seiging army, I assume none of the troops INSIDE the city can be part of the battle, whether they are garrisoned or part of any army that just happens to be occupying a hex in that city, correct?

If so, what do I do when I see an army approaching a city. Should I send an army (or armies) out to fight it BEFORE it gets to the city?

They can certainly reinforce, at least from what I can tell. When I besiege an AI city and it attacks with an exterior army to break the siege, sometimes it will also use the city's defenses as reinforcements during the fight. Which is good for me, since it means that afterwards the city has 0 defenders and I can insta-take it. :)

Your garrison will join as well if you attack with an exterior army, but they won't benefit from any denfence bonuses your city give you.

sorry, but i need to ask about this topic, too: if i want to break a siege, i should attack with 1 unit from the outside. All garrisoned units will also attack (as reinforcement?) plus they get the fortification bonus, right?

The fortification bonus only works on defense. If you are attacking, no bonus.
This works for me when I am attacking the city. I will arrive and lay siege. It is going to take 3 or 4 turns to wear down the defenses. Usually about the second turn the AI player will attack me, giving up the defense bonus. Not the best move for him unless he manages to get another army in range.
