How to activate a Pillar?

Hi all. I've purchased this a long time ago without playing it. After falling in love with Endless Space 2, I decided to give this a shot again aswell. So far so good. But, the game keeps telling me I need to activate a pillar, but I don't know how. I don't think I've seen that in the tutorial, but could be mistaken.

You are playing the "Ardent Mages" faction. This faction can use "pillars" (some you have from the beginning, more you get by research).
