Go to the mini-map at the lower left of the big map. On top of it is a row of buttons. One of them is Map Options (I believe it's second from the left in the row of buttons), press it and you get a long list of things you can display vs hide on the main map. I believe the one that you uncheck to hide units is called something strange like "unit flags".
I never had a mod that hid units, so I can't recommend a mod to you to do that, in case you don't want to get GS. But if you do get GS, you will be able to hide units.
I'm using GS and do not have this option. Can you post a screenshot showing this option?
Anyway, wise or not, I just want to do it ^^
This is an object lesson in the persistence of mods. I disabled all of my mods after the improved UI that the game itself tossed in some time around GS (the yield display under that row of leader icons is especially nice), yet I have noticed even before this Concise UI issue, that some mods seem to re-enable themselves, presumably because I checked a box for them to automatically update when I originally installed them, then when they update automatically, they enable automatically. I did nothing to re-enable Concise UI, yet there it was when I went to check at the prompting of this question about hiding unit flags. I will check and see if Concise UI does anything more useful to me than hiding unit flags, and if not, this time I will uninstall and not just disable.
At any rate, even with all mods actually disabled, Map Options in clean and updated GS has a lot more choices than just the three Pixl-Pixl can see: grid, resources, and yield.
It actually has a screenshot mode that you can turn on :)
