How to change a trade route?

So I have one trade route, says it takes 15 turns to complete. My understanding is I cannot move the trader to another city until a trade post has been built. I am seeing no information on how long it will take for the post to be done. What am I missing?

You have to wait until the route completes. Unfortunately, the game only tells you the distance to your destination not how long it will take to complete. Traders have to last a certain number of turns, and if it makes a round trip before it meets this minimum, it will make another round trip. Read more here:

yeh, a 15 tile trade route, in gathering storm, is about the least optimal distance. in medieval age and beyond it will last 60 turns. weird math, but that's the formula.

If you are eager enough to end the trade route, declare war on the civ whose city it leads to. This won't work for internal trade routes, obviously. I guess you could make a deal giving another civ one of the cities involved in the internal trade route, and that would end the route, but I can't say I've ever done that.
