Art is themed by placing 3 works of the same type (religious, portrait, etc) but different Artists. This can be tricky.
Artifacts from archaeology are themed by 3 different artifacts from the same era but different civilizations.
Once you have a museum themed you get bonus yields. Theming only works in Museums. Though because of a graphical bug if you add buildings in other cities later, the display can get offset so you will see 'themed' on amphitheaters or other spots on the display.
Its fairly easy to understand theming.
Archaeological
You need Artifcats from the same Era (ie all classical, ect) however each piece must be from a different civilization. So you need each piece in the museum to be from a different civilization however all from the same era.
If you succeed you get a themeing bonus and it doubles the output of all the pieces.
Art
You must fill the slots with all of the Same type of Art (aka all of them being Portraits, or all of them being Religious) however each one must be a different artist.
Doing so doubles the out put of the pieces.
So to force a themeing you would need at least 4 Great Artists to get one theming bonus as an example. Or you trade your other art pieces from the same artist to other civ's for there great works to nab your themeing bonus.
Kristina's ability however just auto Themes if you fill all slots.
Long Story short themeing is fairly easy. You need all slots to be of the same "Type" but from different "Sources"
Arch:
Types: Ancient - Classical - Medieval - Renaissance - Industrial
Source: Unique City State, Unique Civilization, Barbarian (each city state and civilization counts as a unique source so you can have multiple city states as long as each artifact is from a different city state ect)
Art
Type: Sculptures, Portraits, Landscapes, Religious
Source: The artists name aka you can't have two Leonardo's.
