How does Trajan’s Column work?
So I'm playing rome and I'm in the Classical or... Ren-whatever-stupid-French-spelling-it-has era and accoding to the description I should get to pick a free City Centre building. But all the cities I found only give me a free Monument. How do I switch?
Google didn't help and searching here turned up squat.

Unrelated: Does anyone know if one can edit a file to disable the unit auto focus? It's driving me insane.

just google it. Easier than me explaining it. It's called auto unit cycle

There's a guide in the Guides section to disable unit auto-cycling, if that's what you're referring to. Also, when I played Rome I was too busy curbstomping the AI to check what Trajan's Column was building :D Oh well.

Trajans Column builds something different depending on the era you found a city in, you don't get to choose what it builds, you just get it.

In the earlier eras, its almost always a monument, though.

It's the start era that affects it, not the current era. It gives the cheapest city centre building that you don't get free by virtue of the era start.
