CIV6--No coal
I can't find coal anywhere and I have explored ~80% of the world. Any ideas where it may be hiding?

now that you mention that, it would be nice to be able to "search" for resources like that across any territory you've already explored.

I know this sounds like a dumb question, but have you actually researched the tech that reveals coal?

The best way to ensure that you get it is to use City States.

There is one State that will give you coal if you are the Suzerain of their city. As long as you've researched coal on the research tree.

I always play as a seafaring civ. So I always get coal for those little toy Ironclads.

You need a tech to reveal coal locations on the map. Depending on your settings, strategic resources can be quite rare. I wouldn't rely on a city-state to get coal since they're a really difficult variable to control, and instead would say it's a better bet to just spread your borders as wide as possible and build as many cities as you can early, so by the time you need those strategic resources, you'll hopefully already have a city nearby that can improve them.

Their is nearly always ONE city state that has a late game strategy resource.

In 3 games, the majority of resourses I need, I can't find. And in one game, I could not find more than 1 coal, oil, and radioatve (in the entire world).

There is something messed up with the mapbuilder, stratigic resources are way to scarce even on Abundant (at least on large and huge maps).

This might be a problem of mistaking coal as a stone resource. When greyed out, they both look the same to me. I have to hover over the icon to tell which one is which.

With that said, it is entirely plausible that you didn't get any coal spawned in lands that you control. There should be several somewhere on the map though.

Christmas is coming up. Santa stole all the coal for the naughty children.

I had heard that there was a coal shortage this year so Santa is giving out Lions jerseys instead (American football, Detroit Michigan. The only national league team that has never been to the superbowl.)

Yeah this is deffinately a thing, often you'll find that the coal resource is behind the stone resource so you can't see it. I had two tiles like that in my last game.

Thank you all. I figured it out. I completed the technology "Steel" before I completed "Steam Power." Therefore, I needed coal in order to produce battleships, but I couldn't see any coal because Steam Power had not yet been achieved--a rookie mistake made by a non-rookie.:steamfacepalm:

They're meant to be scarce, though. You only ever need one of each, two if you don't build encampments.

In order to find resources in your own territory, use the reports button at the top and click over to resources. This will tell you the city that is closest to your resource. You may be able to see resources where the little pictures are at the top of the screen as well.
