Do rail improve production in any way?
Or is just increased movement?

From memory I think it does. But the real question should be:

Is it worth building railroads with all the pollution it causes and the ugly look of the railroad? For the time being imo - no.

Railroad improves movement. They do not improve tile yields.

Not really noticed, it looks absolutely awful as well, all the part roads breaking off, you end up with a railroad at looks like this: ----k--kkkk----l-- instead of ----------------

They don't improve tile yields this is true but from memory I'm sure it improves basic production to any city connected to the capital. I guess I may have to boot up the game to confirm that, not played it since my first game just after GS released.

Railroads only increase movement speed. The only other effect is a +2 (+3 if first) era score for connecting two of there cities with railroads.

The best Road is a modern Road which gives 0.5 MP per tile
Railroads are 0.25 MP per tile.

Also railroads only have a one time cost of CO2 emissions. So take that into considerations.

Loaded the game up and couldn't find anything regarding Production bonus. I was sure there was so I looked through all new Governments and Policies and still no. Unless it was a City State bonus I had, not sure. So for now it's a hard no I guess.

They are still ugly lol. Even if they did play nice with Districts and the new improvements and actually showed up on those tiles they would still be ugly. They just look blurry to me and no where near as good as they used to in 4 or 5 (whichever version it was they were in).

Railroads seem to have been thrown into the game just because so many people wanted them. They don't seem finished to me, just a rush job to be added to the "new content" list for the expansion. Hopefully Firaxis can give them more love over the coming months.

Ok, thanx guys.

You get bonus gold to your trade routes for having quicker trade routes i.e. quicker embarking, roads, railroads. I am not aware of what the increase is for having railroads but I have had trade routes racking over 50gp per turn, which I don't recall having before (that's a good 10-15 gold per turn more than usual). Island Plates, Marathon, Huge and Sparse Resources. That yield per turn should be looked at in the context of sparse resources i.e. luxuries usually bump up trade route yields.

The icon that shows up in the trade route screen regarding extra bonuses mentions railroads, even in vanilla where there aren't any. So presumably it helps trade routes in some way.

is there any way to remove railroads after you build them?

Only 1 way but you wont like it.

Give the city away then conquer it back and Raze it.

Why didn’t they provide a better way to build them than tediously moving a military engineer one tile at a time? Even a point to point system would be a huge improvement.

@Paulytnz

you're right. I don't like it. seems like an oversight on firaxis' part - or incompetence. and it seems like a lot of people built railroads for the first time because the railroad entry on civopedia says nothing about co2 and then realize it does contribute.

It contributes once. When it is built. It has no co2 upkeep so theres really no reason to remove it.

The problem however is that each and every piece of Railroad adds to Co2 so really, its not worth building them. The Cons out weigh the Pros. But you are right, no reason to remove. Just don't build them at all in future playthroughs.

People might want to remove them tho because they still look ugly/bugged? Not played for a while so not sure if recent patches have fixed that.
