There’s a fairly generous grace period in camps before they start spawning serious threats. Take out nearby ones before they become a problem.
Barbarians are fine for the majority of people. If you're petitioning for a change to the base game, I wouldn't waste the energy hoping. Turn them off or change them with a mod.
Wait till you get swordsmen spawning so rapidly they are killing your knights by just spamming them.
I also had a scout come in and destroy 2 of my districts whilst I was off killing his camp. He destroyed my campus and holy before I even reached his camp.
So... you're saying that you left your city undefended while a barb scout was wandering around, didn't bother to go after him and instead went looking for the village to clean it... and the scout pillaged one campus and one holy site (a thing that takes 2~4 turns to do) BEFORE you got to the village.
Sorry to ask but where's the surprise or awkwardness in this? :)
It usually just forces you to build 3 slingers early and push for archers ASAP. Once that is done barbarians usually cease to be a threat.
1 - go explore the surrounding tiles with your warrior.
2 - first thing to build is a slinger. Go explore surrounding tile with it too.
3 - you should spot nearby camps before they spam units
4 - send the warrior and the slinger to destroy the camp. Try to get the eureka to build archers
Afterwards try to build new archers and another melee unit. Your aim is to destroy barbarian camps, not just to kil barbarian units.
One slinger is far from enough unless you're playing in settler difficulty. Archers are also useful for early wars. If you manage to get some xp one your troops early on, you can even counter-attack against a warmonger civ like the Zulus or Sumer. Alternatively, they are a nice source of gold to build more settlers faster.
Well they are certainly a threat in my game with Rise and Fall. Espeically if you have a camp near your first city they are a nightmare and can slow you down a lot trying to control them.
